What it is

Help with a child care bill while a parent works or studies.

Alabama pays part of a sibling's child care while a parent works, studies or trains; you pay part based on income. Being at the hospital does not count as work for a new application. A family already getting the help can keep it through a temporary break to care for a family member.

Eligibility rules
  • Initial gross monthly limits effective June 1, 2026: 2 people $2,644; 3 $3,331; 4 $4,019; 5 $4,706; 6 $5,394.
  • The initial test uses gross income without deductions.
  • Care normally covers children under 13. Before age 19, a child unable to care for themselves may qualify with certification from a physician, psychiatrist or psychologist. Caring for a hospitalized child alone is not an entry activity.

  • Some temporary absences can preserve existing assistance.
What the help includes
  • Approval identifies the payment and your family fee. The June 2026 schedule charges weekly fees per child from $0 to $30 in the initial income bands, with higher continuing-eligibility bands and possible priority waivers; the agency must calculate your case.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the Department of Human Resources child care office about your family’s application or existing case.
  2. Have ready: gross income, your child care arrangement and the treatment schedule or hospital letter.
  3. Say whether you already receive assistance, because that changes the review.

After you ask
  • Ask the local child-care management agency about missing information, the family fee, funding and the expected decision date. For an existing case, give the dates of a temporary caregiving absence and whether employment continues. The agency confirms the protected period and each child’s certification end date.
  • New applications since May 8, 2026 go on a waiting list unless the family is in a priority group, such as a child in protective services or foster care or a family leaving cash assistance. Ask DHR whether you fit one.
Good to know

Caring for a hospitalized child is not listed as an activity that qualifies a new applicant.

Other details
  • A return to qualifying work or study can change the entry decision.
  • If you already get child-care help, a short break from work to care for your child usually keeps it in place; ask the agency how long the break can last.

  2. If you are not, ask what counts as an approved activity where a parent has had to stop work.

Watch out

  • Caring for a hospitalised child is not on the list of activities that gets you in the first time.
  • Alabama counts gross income with no deductions at all.
  • If you are already in, say so before anything lapses: the protection for a temporary absence is clearer than the rule for getting in.
