What it is

Alabama Medicaid helps with travel to covered appointments and approved overnight stays.

Travel help can reduce the cost of repeated clinic visits. Medicaid also covers approved meals and lodging for overnight trips. Booking rules and receipts matter, especially for care outside Alabama.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child must have Medicaid. An escort is allowed for a recipient under 21.

  • Rides to covered appointments.
  • Up to $50 per person per day for meals and lodging together.
  • An eligible child can travel with one escort.
What the help includes
  • For Medicaid-paid out-of-state transportation, a physician’s statement must explain the need for the trip and why the care cannot be obtained in Alabama. This transport rule is separate from the rules for coverage of the medical service itself.
  • The out-of-state hospital must enroll with Alabama Medicaid.
