Alabama program

Coverage for you, the parent

Health coverage for you as a parent or caretaker, with a much lower income line.

What it is

Health coverage for you as a parent or caretaker, with a much lower income line.

Your child's Medicaid does not insure you. Alabama's line for a parent is very low, about $495 a month for a family of four, and the state did not widen Medicaid to adults. A parent above that line and below the poverty line has no Medicaid and no premium help; that gap is real. Above the poverty line, a bought plan with premium help is the route.

Eligibility rules
  • The line is about 18% of the poverty level: $410 a month after deductions for three people, $495 for four (2026). (merge with items[1] and drop "published March 11" and "rather than an unrounded percentage estimate")
  • Alabama’s 2026 income sheet, published March 11, lists $410 monthly after deductions for three people and $495 for four. The counselor can use the current table for your Medicaid household, rather than an unrounded percentage estimate.
  • The parent line is very low, but other doors exist: coverage during and after pregnancy, disability-based Medicaid, coverage for former foster youth, and a transition period after wages rise. Ask the counselor to check each one. A decision usually takes 45 days, or 90 when it depends on disability.
What you get
  • Your own Medicaid coverage if you qualify.
  • A separate review of marketplace options when Medicaid does not fit.
What the help includes
  • This is coverage for the adult, separate from the child’s coverage.
  • Marketplace premium help uses expected yearly household income.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital financial counselor to include you in the Insure Alabama coverage review.
  2. Have ready: current pay, expected yearly income and any letter showing when work insurance ends.
  3. Ask the counselor to compare HealthCare.gov options and hospital assistance if you remain uninsured.

Alabama Medicaid: 800-362-1504. HealthCare.gov: 800-318-2596 for Marketplace coverage. · Official page ↗

After you ask
  • A coverage-loss enrollment window generally lasts 60 days after loss of work coverage. Loss of Medicaid gives 90 days.
  • The enhanced marketplace premium savings ended December 31, 2025.
Good to know

If you are over the parent line, ask the hospital's financial counselor what help exists for an uninsured parent. Other Medicaid categories exist for adults in particular situations, and the counselor can say whether one fits you.

Other details
  • Alabama did not expand Medicaid to all low-income adults. Hospital financial assistance is a separate conversation from insurance.
Ask your social worker

“Can you check whether I qualify for my own coverage, and compare the costs and gaps in the options? If an application makes sense, could you help me with it?”

Why I’m asking: I need to understand my own coverage while caring for my child.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Ask to be tested yourself, and watch the 60 days if a job plan is ending.

Your social worker

The hospital's financial counsellor can say what the hospital does for an uninsured parent while this is unresolved.

The care team

Nothing.

Who decides
The Alabama Medicaid Agency for the caretaker group; the federal marketplace for a bought plan.
Ask your social worker
“Could we review my own coverage separately from my child’s, including any special Medicaid category or Marketplace option?”

How to apply

First step: Talk with the social worker about your own insurance and any actual coverage-loss date. Alabama Medicaid is at 800-362-1504 and HealthCare.gov at 800-318-2596.

  1. If a parent's job coverage is ending, note the date: the 60-day window starts from it.
  2. Ask for the parent to be tested on the same application as the child.
  3. If income is under the poverty line and over the caretaker line, ask the hospital's financial counsellor what the hospital does for an uninsured parent.

Where it starts: The hospital counselor can review the parent separately through Alabama Medicaid at 800-362-1504, and Marketplace options through HealthCare.gov at 800-318-2596.

What to gather

  • The date job coverage ends, in a letter from the employer
  • Expected household income for the year
  • This month's pay for each adult

How long: Ordinary Medicaid applications have a 45-day standard, or 90 days if based on disability, with documented unusual exceptions. Qualifying coverage loss can provide a Marketplace enrollment window.

What a yes looks like

A notice adding the parent to Medicaid, or a marketplace plan starting the month after you enrol.

What a no looks like, and the next move

A counselor can review the denial, appeal rights and other coverage categories. An ordinary caretaker income comparison does not establish that there is no help.

Watch out

  • The child's coverage does not cover the parent, and nobody will tell you that unprompted.
  • Miss the 60 days after job coverage ends and you wait for open enrolment. Losing Medicaid gives 90 days instead.
  • The extra pandemic savings on marketplace premiums ended on December 31, 2025, so a plan costs more this year than the figure a friend remembers.

Dates that change this

2026-01-13: Alabama publishes no dollar table for the parent and caretaker group. Every figure here is the rule's percentage applied to the 2026 poverty guidelines, and the caseworker's own arithmetic decides. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Alabama has a low ordinary caretaker Medicaid limit. The 2026 sheet lists $410 monthly for three people and $495 for four after deductions; other adult eligibility categories need separate review.

  • $324.6/month — Caretaker parent line, household of 2, estimate from the poverty table
  • $410/month — Caretaker parent limit for three, $410 after deductions in the 2026 state sheet; the program household still needs review
  • $495/month — Caretaker parent limit for four, $495 after deductions in the 2026 state sheet; the program household still needs review
  • $580.2/month — Caretaker parent line, household of 5, estimate from the poverty table

Covers: Full Medicaid for the parent when the line is met

Legal protection: 60 days before or after job coverage ends to buy a marketplace plan · 90 days after Medicaid or children's coverage ends

What it costs the family: No premium for the caretaker group. A marketplace plan costs what the premium help leaves.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
Alabama publishes a 2026 caretaker dollar table. Official indexed text confirms $410 for three and $495 for four after deductions. The rule has a 13% FPL base and conditional five-percentage-point allowance; do not add another disregard to printed limits. Other displayed household-size estimates require agency confirmation.
Residency
Alabama
Processing standard
Ordinary applications: 45 days; disability-based applications: 90 days, with documented unusual exceptions under 42 CFR 435.912.

Decisions this site cannot make: Alabama Medicaid MAGI determination for the caretaker group

Expect friction on: No dollar table for this group is published, so the caseworker's own figure is the one that counts

The trap: Do not count on your own Medicaid arriving with your child's. They are different groups with different lines, and the parent line is a small fraction of the child's.
