Alabama program
Money for groceries each month (Food Assistance)
Monthly grocery money on a card (Alabama Food Assistance, or SNAP).
What it is
Monthly grocery money on a card (Alabama Food Assistance, or SNAP).
Food Assistance helps pay for groceries as income changes. The county checks current monthly income and deductions. A household with an elderly or disabled member can use a different income test, so the first comparison is not the whole answer.
Eligibility rules
- Gross monthly limits for October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026: 2 people $2,292; 3 $2,888; 4 $3,483; 5 $4,079; 6 $4,675.
- The net monthly limit for four people is $2,680. A household with an elderly or disabled member generally needs only the net test.
- There is no savings test for most households; the income test still applies.
- From October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, the three-person gross/net screens are $2,960/$2,277 monthly. The four-person gross screen becomes $3,575. September applications use the earlier table.
What you get
- Monthly grocery money on an EBT card.
- Benefits within seven days for households that meet the expedited-service rules.
What the help includes
- A qualifying elderly or disabled member can allow a deduction for medical costs above $35 monthly.
- For three people, the maximum is $785 a month through September 30, 2026 and $808 from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027; many households receive less. The county subtracts allowed expenses, including a standard deduction, part of earnings, qualifying dependent care and housing costs. Additional medical and shelter rules apply only when a household member meets SNAP’s elderly or disability rules.
If you decide to apply
- Ask your county Department of Human Resources office about the Food Assistance application.
- Have ready: current pay, housing and utility costs, and medical costs if someone qualifies as disabled.
- Ask the social worker to help explain a recent pay drop or urgent food need.

After you ask
- An approval sets a monthly amount and review date.
- A decision usually takes up to 30 days. Benefits can come within seven days when the household has under $150 of income this month and $100 or less in cash, or when income and cash together are less than rent and utilities.
Good to know
Your child's cancer does not by itself count as a disability for SNAP; that needs a disability benefit such as SSI. If someone at home gets one, the looser rules apply.
Other details
- This month’s income matters after a pay cut. Last year’s tax return may not describe the current situation.
Federal background: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Official sources
“Could grocery help fit our current income after the allowed expenses, and what reporting would it involve? If it is worth applying, could you help us show the current figures?”
Why I’m asking: I want food help to reflect what we can afford now.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Report this month's income, not last year's, and report a drop as soon as it happens.
Your social worker
The oncology social worker knows the county office and can help you file.
The care team
Nothing.
- Who decides
- The county Department of Human Resources.
- Ask the agency
- “Our income dropped this month. Can this be treated as an urgent application?”
How to apply
First step: The social worker can help with a county DHR application and an expedited-service screen covering income, available cash and shelter costs.
- Apply as soon as pay drops, not at the end of the month.
- Say plainly if there is almost no income and almost no cash: that is the seven-day route.
- If your child gets disability benefits, say so and ask about the medical cost deduction.

Where it starts: Apply through the county Department of Human Resources.
What to gather
- This month's pay stubs for everyone in the home
- Rent or mortgage and utility amounts
- Medical costs, if someone in the home is disabled
How long: Eligible households normally receive usable benefits within 30 days of filing; qualifying expedited households receive them within seven calendar days.
What a yes looks like
A card and a monthly amount, with a review date.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Usually the gross limit. Ask whether anyone in the home counts as disabled, because then only the net limit applies.
Watch out
- DHR reviews current circumstances and reasonably anticipated income; a recent loss of pay can affect eligibility.
- A household with an elderly or disabled member only has to meet the net limit and can deduct medical costs over $35 a month.
- Alabama generally uses broad-based categorical eligibility; DHR checks whether an exception requires a resource test.
Dates that change this
2025-10-01: The table runs to September 30, 2026 and a successor was not found. Whether Alabama uses the wider categorical route was not established, so the figures here are the narrower published ones.

The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- published gross and net monthly limits for households of 2 to 6, October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026
- Residency
- Alabama
- Processing standard
- Usable benefits within 30 days for eligible households, or seven calendar days when expedited-service criteria are met.
Decisions this site cannot make: County Department of Human Resources determination
The trap: A household with a disabled member only has to meet the net limit, not the gross one, and can subtract medical costs over $35 a month. Once a child is on disability benefits, that can change the answer entirely.
