What it is

Alaska Heating Assistance helps eligible households with the cost of heating their home.

Heating can remain a large bill when earnings drop. Assistance is run by the state in many communities and by a tribal housing authority in others. The office serving your community decides the amount and eligibility.

Eligibility rules
  • Income at or under 150% of Alaska's poverty line, judged on the office's own income period. The state office and the tribal housing authorities use slightly different tables, so ask the one that serves your community. (one bullet in place of five)

  • A payment toward seasonal heating costs, with no application charge.
What the help includes
  • The benefit goes toward the heating account; the approved amount depends on the administering program.

  • The state’s published 2026 application gives a 45-day processing standard for a complete application. A processing standard is not the date a fuel delivery or account credit arrives.
  • The state’s published application lists October 1–April 30 for ordinary heating assistance and October 1–June 30 for crisis assistance. Tribal offices can have different calendars; the social worker can help confirm the office and season before you choose to pursue help.
  • A shutoff notice or lack of fuel is a reason to discuss the crisis process separately from an ordinary application. The administering office confirms the crisis response time and final rules for the coming season.
Good to know

Different offices serve different communities. Their season dates and processing times may differ.

Other details
  • The older Alaska Affordable Heating Program has not run since its funding was removed in fiscal year 2016.
  • If someone in the home is seriously ill, the electric company must give 30 days' notice before a shutoff instead of 15. Tell it in writing; the bill stays owed.
  • Some rural electric utilities provide a Power Cost Equalization credit directly on eligible residential bills. This is separate from income-tested heating assistance. The utility confirms whether the account receives it and the current credit.
