Help paying for child care
Arizona child-care assistance helps pay for eligible children’s care when income and activity rules are met.
What it is
Arizona child-care assistance helps pay for eligible children’s care when income and activity rules are met.
Arizona pays most of a child care bill for a household under the line while a parent works or studies. Being at your child's bedside is not on the list for a new claim. If you already get this help, a temporary absence to care for an ill family member does not end it.
Eligibility rules
- The ordinary entry income screen is 165% of poverty. From October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, it is $3,665 a month for three people or $4,422 for four. From October 1, 2026, the published figures are $3,758 and $4,538. DES also checks the qualifying reason for care, referral category and whether funding or a waiting list applies.
- Children are generally under 13. DES checks an approved activity, referral or other qualifying category. If the reason for a new claim is time at a child’s hospital bedside, the caseworker can confirm whether another qualifying category applies. Continuing cases use separate rules.
- The FY2026 redetermination table, effective October 1, 2025, uses 85% of state median income: $6,426 a month for three people or $7,649 for four. This differs from the initial 165%-of-poverty screen.
What you get
- Payment toward child care, with a family share based on income.
- A 12-month eligibility period after approval.
What the help includes
- DES pays the child-care service directly, leaving the income-based family share.
If you decide to apply
- Ask DES child-care assistance about a new application or a change to existing help.
- Have current income, proof of work or study and the child-care service’s details ready. Explain whether you already receive assistance.

After you ask
- If you already get help, missing work to care for your child counts as a protected temporary absence; ask the caseworker how long it can last and get the dates in writing. A new application faces a long waiting list (about 8,900 families in September 2026).
Good to know
Already getting this help and asking for it new are two different tests. If you already have it, tell DES about the treatment and the help continues; if you are new, a parent needs to be working or studying.
Other details
- Your answers’ sibling question identifies a possible need. It does not establish the parent’s qualifying work or study activity.

“Could child-care assistance help our child or other children in the family, or continue if we already receive it? Could you help us understand the activity rules, family share and what to report?”
Why I’m asking: I want stable, suitable child care while we manage treatment.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply, and report a change rather than stopping.
Your social worker
The social worker can help describe the household situation.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The Arizona Department of Economic Security.
- Ask the agency
- “I already have child care help and I am now at the hospital with my child most days. How do I report that so it continues?”
How to apply
First step: If you already get child care help, report the change. If not, apply and describe the work or study.
- If you already get this help, tell them about the hospital absence rather than letting it lapse.
- If you do not, apply and describe your work or study, not only the hospital.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Apply through the department’s child care assistance page.
What to gather
- This month’s income
- Proof of work or study
- The child care provider’s details
How long: Once approved, eligibility runs twelve months.
What a yes looks like
The state paying the provider directly, with a family share left to you.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Check whether the no was income or the activity rule, and ask which.
Watch out
- Sitting with your child in hospital was not established as a reason to start a new claim.
- If you already get this help, a temporary absence to care for a family member is protected; report it.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Most of a child care bill paid for a household under $4,422 a month for four people.
- $4,422/month — Income screen, home of 4
- $3,665/month — Income screen, home of 3
- $12 — How long eligibility runs once approved
Covers: Payment toward approved child care for an eligible child; the child needing cancer treatment can also qualify.
Legal protection: A time-limited absence from work to care for a family member is a protected temporary change for a family already receiving help
What it costs the family: A family share applies; the amount depends on income.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- at or under 165% of the poverty level
- Activity
- an approved activity is also required; hospital attendance with an ill child was NOT FOUND as one for a new application
- Continuing
- the approved plan protects a time-limited absence to care for a family member for a family already eligible
The trap: Being at your child’s hospital bedside was not established as an approved activity for a new application. The plan does protect a temporary absence to care for a family member for a family that is already eligible, which is a different thing. Say which situation you are in.
