Arizona program

Money for groceries each month

Arizona Nutrition Assistance puts grocery money on a card each month. It is the state’s SNAP program.

What it is

Arizona Nutrition Assistance puts grocery money on a card each month. It is the state’s SNAP program.

Grocery money on a card. The first screen is 200% of poverty for your household; rent, utilities and child care then set the amount. SNAP counts the household differently from Medicaid, so this is a separate check.

Eligibility rules
  • The expanded gross-income screen is 200% of poverty. Households qualifying through that screen are treated as meeting the resource rules.
  • From March 1 through September 30, 2026, monthly screens are $4,442 for three people and $5,360 for four.
  • From October 1, 2026, the published monthly screens are $3,608 for two people, $4,554 for three, $5,500 for four, $6,448 for five and $7,394 for six.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery money on a benefits card.
  • A seven-day decision and card for households meeting an expedited test.
What the help includes
  • Households with an elderly or qualifying disabled member can receive medical-expense deductions. DES checks the SNAP disability category, including qualifying Social Security disability benefits; a cancer diagnosis alone is not the test.
  • If a household member is elderly or has a recognized disability, medical costs above $35 a month are deducted: a flat $160 for costs up to $195, or the actual costs above that.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask about Nutrition Assistance on the same Health-e-Arizona Plus application as health coverage.
  2. Have current income, rent or mortgage, utilities and qualifying medical bills ready.
  3. If you already receive help, discuss a pay change through MyFamilyBenefits or Health-e-Arizona Plus.

After you ask
  • The ordinary decision period is 30 days. Expedited service is within seven calendar days.
  • Expedited tests include gross monthly income below $150 and liquid resources no more than $100; a destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household with liquid resources no more than $100; or gross income plus liquid resources below rent or mortgage plus the applicable utility amount. DES decides whether the household meets a test.
Good to know

Your child's cancer alone does not open the medical-cost deduction. That needs someone at home getting a disability check; if so, Arizona takes a standard $145 off for medical costs.

Other details
  • A change in pay can change the award. DES uses the household and allowable deductions for SNAP, which need not match Medicaid’s tax household.
Ask your social worker

“Could grocery help fit our current income, and would treatment-related expenses change the amount? Could you help us weigh the application and check the deductions?”

Why I’m asking: I want food costs to be manageable while our household income changes.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply on the same form and report the drop in pay straight away.

Your social worker

The social worker checks whether the seven-day route applies.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Arizona Department of Economic Security.
Ask the agency
“Our income just dropped. Can we apply for food assistance today, and do we fit the seven-day route?”

How to apply

First step: Tick food assistance on the Health-e-Arizona Plus application you are already filing.

  1. Tick food assistance on the same Health-e-Arizona Plus application.
  2. Say if income has just dropped; that can open the seven-day route.
  3. If someone at home gets a monthly disability check, ask for the medical deduction.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: The same Health-e-Arizona Plus application. Report a pay drop through MyFamilyBenefits or on 1-855-432-7587.

What to gather

  • This month’s income for everyone at home
  • Rent or mortgage and utility costs
  • Medical costs if a member is elderly or has a disability

How long: Thirty days ordinarily; seven calendar days on the fastest route.

What a yes looks like

A card with a monthly amount loaded on it.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Check which income figure was used, and report any drop since you applied.

Watch out

  • Savings do not close this door for most households; do not rule yourself out.
  • Ask for the medical deduction if someone at home gets a monthly disability check.
  • Report a pay drop within days; the amount can rise from that month.

Dates that change this

2026-04-06: For elderly or qualifying disabled members, the DES manual revised September 14, 2026 shows a $160 deduction for allowable unreimbursed monthly medical expenses above $35 and no more than $195. Above $195, use actual allowable expenses minus $35. DES confirms the applicable benefit-month rule because the authority note still refers to 2025; the revision date is not an established legal effective date. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

2026-10-01: The income limits rise on October 1, 2026 to $3,608 / $4,554 / $5,500 / $6,448 / $7,394 for two to six people.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Grocery money each month; the screen is $4,442 a month for three people and $5,360 for four, effective March 1, 2026.

  • $5,360/month — Income screen, home of 4
  • $4,442/month — Income screen, home of 3
  • $160/month — Standard medical deduction where a member is elderly or has a disability
  • $7 — Days to a decision and a card in the fastest route

Legal protection: Households that pass the expanded screen are treated as meeting the savings rules

What it costs the family: None.

The trap: For elderly or qualifying disabled members, the DES manual revised September 14, 2026 shows a $160 deduction for allowable unreimbursed monthly medical expenses above $35 and no more than $195.
