CalFresh can help with groceries when money is tight. The county checks current income, household members and allowed deductions before setting your amount. A pay drop can change the answer, and qualifying disability rules can open another route.

Who can get it
  • For four people, the gross monthly income screen is $5,360 during October 2025–September 2026.
  • The county decides the food household, applicable deductions and final eligibility.
  • The medical deduction requires an elderly or qualifying disabled member. A child receiving SSI or another qualifying disability benefit can meet that condition.
  • If someone meets the elderly or qualifying-disability rules, your household may have another route above the ordinary gross-income line. Modified categorical eligibility can remove the ordinary resource test. The county still checks deductions and the other rules.

  • A monthly amount on an EBT card for groceries; the maximum depends on household size and your amount on income after deductions.
  • A decision normally within 30 days, or three days when income and cash on hand are very low.

What happens next
  • An approval notice gives the monthly benefit and EBT-card information.
  • The usual decision period is 30 days. Households meeting the emergency rules receive expedited service within three calendar days. The county checks income, available cash, shelter and utility costs, and any qualifying migrant or seasonal farmworker circumstances.
  • A denial identifies the reason. A later income change can support another review.
  • Emergency tests include gross monthly income below $150 and liquid resources of $100 or less. Another test compares gross income plus liquid resources with shelter and utility costs. Certain destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker households also qualify with liquid resources of $100 or less. A pay drop alone does not establish these tests.
Good to know

Your child's cancer alone does not open the medical deduction. That needs someone at home who is elderly or gets a disability benefit such as SSI.

  • The caregiver exemption has no time limit. The county checks whether care prevents working 30 hours weekly.
  • A social worker can help document the care needed for the work-rule review.
  • The published food amounts expire September 30, 2026 and need the next annual table afterward.
