Monthly cash help (CalWORKs)
Monthly cash and related help for families who meet CalWORKs’ low-income rules.
What it is
Monthly cash and related help for families who meet CalWORKs’ low-income rules.
CalWORKs is monthly cash when family income is very low, much lower than the child Medi-Cal line. The county takes part of earnings off before it compares, and checks savings against $12,552, or $18,829 with a disabled member. A parent caring for a sick child can be excused from the work rules.
Who can get it
- For July 2026–June 2027, Region 1 uses an entry standard of $1,960 for a three-person aid group or $2,325 for four. The county applies deductions first, including $450 of earnings for each worker. These are not limits on your raw pay.
- Region 2 entry limits are $2,211 for four and $1,859 for three.
- In 2026, the limit on money and property that count is $12,552, or $18,829 with a disabled member or someone age 60 or older.
- The county decides who counts in the family for cash help. A child receiving SSI is left out of that group, and that child’s SSI payment is not counted.
- A nonparent relative who does not receive aid may qualify for a child-only grant using the child’s income. Adoption, the child’s income and SSI can change that calculation. Ask the county to check the legal relationship and cash-aid group.
What you get
- Monthly cash up to a maximum that depends on household size and region; income reduces the amount.
- Eligible urgent needs can receive up to $200 within one working day.
- Child care and possible caregiving exemptions from work activities.
What you get
- The most a family of three gets is about $1,175 a month in the higher-cost counties (a little more if no adult is expected to work) and about $1,115 elsewhere. Income reduces it.
- Region 2 payments are lower. The county applies income deductions and calculates the award.
- A parent caring for a sick child can request review for a work-activity exemption.
If you decide to apply
- Ask county social services about a BenefitsCal application if you decide to seek cash help.
- Have ready: current income, rent and utility bills, bank balances and details of any urgent need.

What happens next
- A standard decision takes 45 days. Eligible Immediate Need cases have a one-working-day payment standard, up to $200.
- The grant notice explains the monthly amount and EBT benefits. A denial names the income, resource or other issue.
Good to know
A child receiving SSI is excluded from the cash-aid group, and that child’s SSI is not counted.
What else to know
- The 60-month limit applies to aided adults, with exceptions, rather than to the child.
- A family of four with an SSI child may be evaluated as a cash-aid unit of three.
- Some counties offer a one-time diversion payment instead of ongoing CalWORKs for a short-term need. If you return during that period, you may have to choose between counting adult time-limit months and repaying the payment. Ask your social worker to get the amount, period and consequences in writing before you choose.
Federal background: CalWORKs is California’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. Monthly cash help for a family with very low income.

“Could CalWORKs help our family, including any child-only option? What work rules, time limits or repayment choices would come with it, and could you help us decide whether to apply?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand cash support if income becomes very low.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply at BenefitsCal.com and ask for immediate-need review if rent or food cannot wait. A relative caregiver asks for a child-only grant.
Your social worker
The social worker can write the letter that excuses a caregiver from welfare-to-work rules.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The county CalWORKs eligibility worker
- Ask your social worker
- “Can you write a letter describing my child's care? The county needs it to review an exemption from cash-aid work rules.”

What to gather
- This month's income for everyone at home
- Rent and utility bills
- Bank balances
How long: 45 days. Immediate Need within one working day.
What a yes looks like
A grant notice with the monthly amount and a food and cash payment (EBT) card.
What a no looks like, and the next move
A notice naming the cash-aid entry income test (MBSAC) or savings. Re-apply the month income drops further.
Watch out
- The entry line ($2,325 a month for four in the higher-cost counties, 2026–27) is far below the Medi-Cal line. A working two-parent family usually does not get in.
- Savings limit: $12,552, or $18,829 with a disabled member. Ask the county which applies.
- An SSI child is left out of the unit: a family of four with an SSI child is judged as three, and the SSI check is not counted.
- If rent or food cannot wait, ask for Immediate Need: up to $200 within one working day.
- A grandparent raising the child can ask for a child-only grant figured on the child's income alone.
Dates that change this
2026-10-01: A 1.8% MAP increase is expected October 1, 2026. The table is not yet published. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- under the MBSAC entry line for the assistance unit after earned-income deductions; Region 1 $2,325 (4), $1,960 (3); Region 2 $2,211 (4), $1,859 (3); July 2026 – June 2027 table
- Resources
- $12,552; $18,829 with a member who is disabled or 60 or older (2026)
- Child only
- relative caregivers can apply on the child's income only
- Ssi child
- excluded from the assistance unit
Decisions this site cannot make: Assistance unit · MBSAC income test · MAP grant computation
Expect friction on: Welfare-to-work rules · Resource limit
The trap: Comparing income before taxes with the grant maximum. The entry test (MBSAC) is separate and lower.
