California program
California adds $97 a month to a child's SSI (State Supplementary Payment)
California’s extra SSI payment, considered with your child’s Social Security claim without a separate state application.
What it is
California’s extra SSI payment, considered with your child’s Social Security claim without a separate state application.
Social Security checks California’s supplement as part of your child’s SSI claim. The amount depends on the child’s living arrangement and other SSI rules. A national income chart alone cannot tell you whether your child qualifies in California.
Who can get it
- The 2026 $97.27 supplement applies to a disabled, nonblind child under 18 living with a parent or relative by blood or marriage.
- Social Security counts a parent's or stepparent's income toward the child (it calls this "deeming"). A grandparent's or guardian's income is treated differently, so tell them who the child lives with.
- A state-only payment may remain when the federal SSI payment falls to zero. Social Security must check the living-arrangement category, income exclusions and resources. The usual $1,091.27 total is not an income limit for every child.
What you get
- In 2026, the usual nonblind child-at-home category adds $97.27 to federal SSI, for up to $1,091.27 before reductions. Other categories differ.
- Social Security pays the state and federal portions together.
What you get
- For the usual nonblind child-at-home category, the 2026 maximum is $1,091.27 before reductions: $994 federal SSI plus $97.27 from California. Social Security must check the living arrangement; blindness, hospitalization or certified nonmedical out-of-home care can use a different rate.
- An SSI award links the child to Medi-Cal automatically.
If you decide to apply
- Ask Social Security at 800-772-1213 to review SSI and the California supplement together if you decide to pursue a claim.
- Have ready: household income and resources, the child’s living arrangements and medical records. They go into the same claim.

What happens next
- The SSI award letter shows the combined amount. No separate state application is needed.
- Social Security calculates California eligibility individually. The simplified national child-deeming chart does not supply a California cutoff.
Good to know
The quoted rate is for a nonblind disabled child under 18 living with a parent or qualifying relative.
What else to know
- SSA says its national child-deeming chart does not apply in states with supplements.
- A full calendar month in hospital can mean a different rate. Social Security checks the living arrangement and applicable exceptions.
Official sources
“How would Social Security work out our child’s SSI and California supplement? What reporting duties and limits would we have, and could you help prepare a claim if it seems worthwhile?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand the combined SSI amount and responsibilities.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Nothing beyond the SSI application. If the notice says income is slightly too high, ask Social Security to check the California rate.
Your social worker
The social worker can confirm the SSI file lists California and the child's living arrangement.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- Social Security
- Ask Social Security
- “Does our SSI file show the California supplement for a disabled child at home? Is our income under the California limit even if it is over the national chart?”
How to apply
First step: File the SSI application. Ask Social Security to confirm the California supplement for a disabled child at home.
- File the SSI application (see the SSI item).
- If Social Security says income is just over the limit, ask it to check the California supplement.
Where it starts: The SSI application covers it. Nothing extra to file
What to gather
- Nothing beyond the SSI application
How long: Decided with the SSI claim.
What a yes looks like
The SSI award letter shows the monthly amount with the state supplement included.
What a no looks like, and the next move
A Social Security notice explains the income, resource, medical or other reason. Social Security can confirm the applicable California supplement category and calculation, and the notice identifies the review deadline.
Watch out
- Social Security's published chart says it does not apply where the state adds money. Do not screen yourself out on it. Ask for the California figure.
- The supplement is for a disabled child living with a parent or relative. A child in hospital for a full calendar month gets a different rate.
Dates that change this
2026-01-01: 2026 rates: $994 federal plus $97.27 state. Both change each January.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 8, 2026.
What it is worth
$97.27 a month on top of federal SSI: $1,091.27 in total for a disabled child at home in 2026.
- $97.27/month — California supplement, disabled child living with a parent or relative (2026)
- $1,091.27/month (before reductions) — Federal SSI plus California supplement (2026)
- $994/month — Federal SSI portion (2026)
Legal protection: Paid by Social Security with the federal check. One application covers both.
What it costs the family: None.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Ssi
- child eligible for SSI, or for the state supplement alone when countable income is above the federal rate but below $1,091.27
- Living arrangement
- disabled (not blind) child under 18 living with a parent or a relative by blood or marriage (State OS code E)
- Deeming
- federal parental deeming; SSA does not publish a California-specific chart and says the national chart does not apply where the state supplements
- Blind child
- $994 + $324.32 = $1,318.32 (ledger SSI-43)
Decisions this site cannot make: Social Security nonmedical rules · DDS medical decision
Expect friction on: Same interview as SSI
The trap: Screening yourself out on the national chart. Social Security's published chart does not apply in a state that adds money. Call and ask for the California figure.
