What it is

Food and nutrition support for eligible children under 5 and parents during pregnancy and after birth.

WIC could be for a sibling or a parent, even when your sick child is too old. The local office checks who qualifies and whether income or an existing benefit meets its rules. It also checks nutritional needs.

Who can get it
  • Participants include pregnant people, parents up to six months postpartum, breastfeeding parents through the baby’s first birthday, and children under 5.
  • The income limit is 185% of poverty: $5,088 monthly for four, May 1, 2026–June 30, 2027.
  • A participant’s Medi-Cal or CalFresh, or a family’s CalWORKs, establishes income eligibility.
  • A family with an infant or pregnant member fully eligible for Medi-Cal also meets the income route. An older sibling’s Medi-Cal alone does not.
  • The local agency also checks California residence and nutritional risk. There is no asset or immigration-status test.

  • Monthly fruit-and-vegetable benefits: $26 for children ages 1–4, $48 during pregnancy or postpartum, and $52 for qualifying breastfeeding participants.
  • A separate food package, nutrition advice and breastfeeding support.

What happens next
  • When the office has room to enroll people, you usually receive an eligibility decision within 20 days. Defined higher-priority cases have a 10-day period, sometimes extended to 15 days with state approval. Ask the office which category and waiting-list rules apply.
  • Approval provides a WIC card with monthly benefits. The agency explains any eligibility refusal.
Good to know

An older sibling’s Medi-Cal alone does not make the whole family income-eligible for WIC.

What else to know
  • The sick child does not have to be the WIC participant.
  • Some applicants qualify for faster WIC processing because of defined nutritional risk or an imminent migrant-family move. Your local WIC agency can check the applicable category and decision deadline; not every infant has the same deadline.

Watch out

  • WIC is per participant. The sibling under 5 or the pregnant parent is the participant, not the sick child.
  • A participant on Medi-Cal or CalFresh, or a family on CalWORKs, passes the income check without pay stubs. Bring the card.
  • A new baby's parent counts for six months after the birth, twelve if breastfeeding.

2025-10-01: Fruit and vegetable amounts $26 / $48 / $52 for October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. They re-index each October.
