What it is

WIC can help feed an eligible young child or parent while the family manages treatment. Its income ceiling is 185% of poverty. Certain benefits can replace the income check, and the clinic checks nutrition needs.
Eligibility rules
- WIC serves pregnant parents and parents up to six months postpartum. Breastfeeding parents can qualify through the baby’s first birthday. Children must be under 5. The clinic also checks nutrition needs.
- The income ceiling is 185% of poverty. For four people, that is $5,088 monthly from May 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
- A participant on Medi-Cal or CalFresh, or a family on CalWORKs, meets the income test. A fully Medi-Cal-eligible pregnant member or infant can qualify the family. An older sibling’s Medi-Cal alone cannot.
- California WIC has no immigration-status or savings test.
What you get
- A monthly food package for each eligible child, usable alongside CalFresh.
- Nutrition support and referrals.
What it is not
- WIC does not cover the whole grocery budget. Ask the clinic about prescribed formula because it is not automatically covered.

After you apply
- Each eligible person receives WIC in their own right. A child under 5 can be served. A child aged 5 or over cannot, though a pregnant or recently pregnant parent may qualify separately.
Good to know
WIC can use your younger child’s current household income. Qualifying benefits may simplify that check, but you do not have to wait for another program’s decision.

- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
