Connecticut program
Buy a plan after losing coverage (Access Health CT)
Connecticut’s health insurance marketplace, where families compare plans and help with the premium.
What it is
Connecticut’s health insurance marketplace, where families compare plans and help with the premium.
A change in work can affect income without ending insurance. Access Health CT can review financial help on an existing plan or options after a qualifying coverage loss. A counselor checks the event, deadline and treatment access.
Eligibility rules
- Losing coverage opens a 60-day window; losing Medicaid has a different rule. Leaving a job does not always end coverage at once, so get the end date in writing.
- In 2026, premium credits use annual income between 100% and 400% of poverty. Covered Connecticut’s ceiling is 175%.
- Covered Connecticut requires age 19–64, Medicaid ineligibility, a Silver plan and use of all available credits.
- The special enrollment for Connecticut’s temporary 2026 premium assistance ended June 30, 2026. Other qualifying events may still open enrollment. Access Health CT confirms the exact loss-specific deadline, eligibility for temporary assistance and whether help continues into 2027. The expired special window is not a current enrollment route.
What you get
- Help with monthly premiums when your household meets the credit rules.
- Individual or family health plans.
- Covered Connecticut pays premiums and covered-care costs for qualifying adults.
What the help covers
- Covered Connecticut pays the qualifying adult’s premium and covered-service cost sharing. Other marketplace costs depend on the plan and credits.
If you decide to apply
- Ask an Access Health CT counselor to compare an income update with a replacement-coverage request.
- Have your current plan details, estimated yearly income and any coverage-end notice ready.
- Ask the hospital to check the plan’s treatment, pharmacy and network rules before you choose.

After you apply
- Coverage usually starts on the first day of the following month. The enrollment confirmation gives the actual start date.
Good to know
The coverage end date and the type of loss affect enrollment timing. A counselor can check the deadline before the old plan ends. A lower premium is not the only comparison: check the cancer team, medicines, deductibles and start date.
Other details
- A continued employer plan is another comparison when available. Its full premium can be higher, but its network may already cover the cancer team.
Federal background: Marketplace special enrollment.
Official sources
“If our insurance ends, how do the marketplace plans compare with keeping the work plan? Could you check our cancer team and total costs, and help us enroll if that is the better choice?”
Why I’m asking: I want to avoid a gap in treatment coverage when work insurance changes.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Provide current coverage details, estimated yearly income and any coverage-end notice for the counselor’s review.
Your social worker
The hospital's financial counsellor can tell you which marketplace plans the oncology group takes.
The care team
Nothing.
- Who decides
- Access Health CT.
- Ask your social worker
- “Our plan ends on this date. Which Access Health CT plans does the oncology group take, and do we qualify for Covered Connecticut?”
How to apply
First step: Go to accesshealthct.com or call 1-855-805-4325, and have the date the old coverage ends in front of you.
- Ask Access Health CT to check the coverage-end notice, event and exact deadline.
- Ask whether Covered Connecticut applies before you pick a plan.
- Check the oncology team is in the plan's network before you enrol.

Where it starts: Access Health CT at accesshealthct.com or 1-855-805-4325 reviews the event, income, enrollment deadline and coverage start date.
What to gather
- The date coverage ends and the letter saying so
- Household income for this year
- The oncology team's name so you can check the network
How long: Access Health CT confirms the decision, enrollment deadline, premium requirement and written start date for the particular event.
Clock: Many qualifying events have a 60-day enrollment window. Access Health CT confirms the exact event, deadline and start date, including any different rule after Medicaid loss. A work change alone does not establish coverage loss.
What a yes looks like
A plan with a start date and a card, with the oncology group in network.
What a no looks like, and the next move
If you are told there is no qualifying event, ask exactly which document proves the loss and by what date.
Watch out
- Many qualifying events have a 60-day enrollment window. Access Health CT confirms the exact event, deadline and start date, including any different rule after Medicaid loss. A work change alone does not establish coverage loss.
- Check the oncology team is in the plan before enrolling; a cheaper plan that drops them is not cheaper.
- This is not HealthCare.gov. Connecticut runs its own.
Dates that change this
2026-01-01: The larger federal premium credits ended after 2025. Connecticut added its own temporary help for 2026; whether it runs in 2027 is not decided.
2026-07-01: Connecticut's 2026 temporary premium help had a special sign-up window that closed June 30, 2026. Outside open enrolment you now need a qualifying event such as losing coverage.
