Money for groceries each month (SNAP)
Monthly grocery money on a benefit card through Connecticut SNAP.
What it is
Monthly grocery money on a benefit card through Connecticut SNAP.
A drop in pay can change the grocery-help calculation. Connecticut’s initial gross-income screen reaches twice the poverty line. Most qualifying households face no savings limit, and DSS calculates the actual benefit.
Eligibility rules
- Through September 30, 2026, monthly gross limits are $3,525 for two people, $4,442 for three, $5,359 for four and $6,275 for five.
- The September 2026 chart ends September 30. DSS confirms the October 2026 gross and net screens, deductions and benefit table for the next period. A later-period income chart is not a guarantee of the benefit amount.
- A household with an older or disabled member and gross income above 200% of poverty has a $4,500 asset limit under the listed exception.
What you get
- A monthly amount on a card for groceries.
- A seven-day emergency processing route when the financial tests are met.
What the help covers
- DSS calculates benefits after allowed deductions from income. Through September 30, 2026, the three-person maximum is $785 monthly, but many families receive less. Pay, housing, utilities and qualifying care expenses affect the result. DSS confirms the separate October 2026 table before a new-period estimate.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the hospital social worker to help with a DSS SNAP application.
- Have current pay, rent or mortgage, utility costs and bank balances ready.
- Ask DSS whether the emergency screen applies if money has nearly stopped.

After you apply
- Seven-day processing has several financial tests. One is gross monthly income below $150 and liquid resources of $100 or less. Another compares income plus liquid resources with rent or mortgage and utilities. A separate test covers some destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker households. DSS decides which test applies.
- DSS ordinarily has 30 days to process a SNAP application; eligible emergency cases receive expedited service within seven days. Ask about the interview, identity proof and any other documents that can follow later. The first month can be prorated, and DSS will confirm the amount and when it is available on the benefit card.
Good to know
Most qualifying households have no savings limit, and vehicles are excluded. A pay change can be reported even when a report is not required.
Other details
- You can report a pay drop at any time, and it can raise the benefit. Required reports are due by the 10th of the month after the change.
Federal background: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Official sources
“Would SNAP help our grocery budget at our current income, and what information affects the amount? Could you help us apply and check the emergency route if it fits?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand how food help responds when treatment changes our income.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply as soon as income drops and say plainly what is in the bank.
Your social worker
The hospital social worker can help you file and flag an emergency case.
The care team
Nothing.
- Who decides
- The Department of Social Services.
- Ask your social worker
- “Our income has just dropped. Can you help us apply for SNAP today and ask for the emergency seven-day route?”
How to apply
First step: Apply through DSS this week, or call 1-855-626-6632 to report a drop in pay.
- Apply the week a parent's pay drops, not the month after.
- Say out loud if you have almost no income and almost nothing in the bank: that is the seven-day route.
- For an existing case, DSS explains required reports and how a voluntary income-drop report affects the benefit.

Where it starts: Apply through DSS. To report a pay drop, call the Benefit Center on 1-855-626-6632.
What to gather
- This month's pay for everyone in the household
- Rent or mortgage and utility costs
- Bank balance
How long: Eligible expedited SNAP cases receive service within seven days; ordinary applications have a 30-day standard. One expedited test is gross monthly income below $150 and liquid resources of $100 or less. Other tests compare income plus liquid resources with rent or mortgage plus utilities, or cover destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker households. DSS decides the applicable test.
What a yes looks like
A card in the post with a monthly amount on it.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask which income figure they used, and whether they counted the month your pay dropped.
Watch out
- Savings usually do not stop you: most households have no asset limit and vehicles do not count.
- Most SNAP households report specified required changes by the 10th of the following month. An income drop may be reported voluntarily; DSS confirms its effect and timing.
- The limits change every October 1.
Dates that change this
2026-10-01: The current SNAP table runs through September 30, 2026. DSS confirms the table effective October 1 before a family relies on future figures.

Decisions this site cannot make: DSS eligibility on gross income and household
Expect friction on: An emergency case is answered in seven days; an ordinary one is slower
The trap: Families assume savings disqualify them. For a categorically eligible household there is no asset limit and vehicles are excluded. A household with someone aged 60 or older, or disabled, whose gross income is over twice the poverty line has a $4,500 asset limit instead. If pay drops, report it the day it happens: you may report a change at any time even when you do not have to.
