SNAP: help buying groceries

Connecticut's SNAP program provides food benefits on an EBT card to eligible households.

What it is

Connecticut's SNAP program provides food benefits on an EBT card to eligible households.

The state card explains the application and the rules that apply in Connecticut.

What you get
If you decide to apply
Ask your social worker

“Could you help us check SNAP and whether we qualify for urgent processing?”

Why I’m asking: Our grocery budget is under pressure, and I want DSS to check our current income and allowable expenses.

More background and detailed requirements

How this works

The state checks income, the people in the food household and allowable expenses. The benefit amount depends on that calculation, so being below an initial income screen does not guarantee a particular payment.

A recent pay drop can make an application worth revisiting. Tell DSS if money for food is running out and ask whether you qualify for expedited processing.

  1. Ask DSS for a SNAP application and help with the household and income questions.

Before you start

  • Household rules for food benefits differ from tax and health-insurance households.
  • Certain disability-related deductions require SNAP's specific disability criteria; cancer alone does not establish the deduction.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply through the state benefits portal using this month's income. Complete the interview and send pay stubs and housing costs.

Your social worker

The social worker helps find the state application and arrange a clinician's caregiving letter if the agency needs proof for a work-rule exemption.

The care team

“Can you check our food-benefit application for faster processing and a work-rule exemption for caring for our child with cancer?”

How to apply

First step: Apply on your state's benefits portal or by phone this week. Ask the social worker for the contact.

  1. Apply the month income drops.
  2. Ask for expedited processing if income is very low.
  3. Name the caregiving for the work-rule exemption.

What to gather

  • This month's pay stubs or a note of the income drop
  • Rent or mortgage and utility amounts (they are deductions)
  • Identity for the household members

How long: 30 days. 7 days when income is very low.

What a yes looks like

A letter with the monthly amount and a grocery benefit card, called an EBT card.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If the letter says income is too high, apply again in the month income drops.

Watch out

  • The maximum is not the expected amount. Most households get less after the net-income math.
  • Apply the month income drops. Benefits start from the application date, and a household with almost no income can be approved within seven days.
  • A parent caring for a sick child can be excused from work rules. Ask for the exemption by name.

Dates that change this

2025-10-01: The maximum amounts roll every October 1; these are fiscal 2026 (October 2025 through September 2026).

The numbers and the rules

The trap: The maximum is not the expected amount. Most households get less after the net-income math. Apply the month income drops. Benefits start from the application date.

What changes by state: The application option, whether the state waives the savings test (most do), and the work-rule exemptions. The dollar table is federal.
