What it is
DC child care vouchers help eligible families pay for care for their children.
Child care help can ease the cost of care for siblings during treatment. A parent on family or medical leave still counts as a working parent here, which is unusual. Whether a place is open depends on your priority group, not only on income.
Eligibility rules
- Up to three times the poverty level, subject to other criteria.
- A qualifying activity, which includes being employed and on family or medical leave; enrollment limited to priority groups 1 to 3 since July 8, 2026.
- District of Columbia.
- The child needing care must be younger than 13, or younger than 19 with a disability. Ordinarily each resident parent or guardian must meet an activity or need category. Employed parents on family or medical leave count as working. OSSE checks any exception and the child’s own priority category.

- Subsidized child care for eligible children, with a family fee based on the program's rules.
Priority and family fees
- Since July 8, 2026 only priority groups can enrol: families in protective services or homeless, a child with a disability, or a parent with a disability, a teen parent or someone fleeing domestic violence. Everyone else goes on a waiting list. A sibling does not get the patient's disability priority.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the DC child care subsidy office about your activity category and priority group.
- Have work or leave information ready, and ask the social worker about documenting the treatment schedule.

Good to know
Since July 8, 2026, groups 4 to 6 go on a waiting list. Meeting the income rule alone does not open a place.
