Help with a sibling’s child care (School Readiness)

School Readiness can help pay for a sibling’s care when income, activity and funding rules fit.

What it is

School Readiness can help pay for a sibling’s care when income, activity and funding rules fit.

Child-care help can keep a sibling's routine going while treatment changes family schedules. School Readiness pays part of the cost while a parent works or studies; being at the hospital does not count as work for a new application. A family already getting the help can ask the coalition to keep the place during medical leave.

Eligibility rules
  • From July 1, 2026, ordinary entry uses 55% of state median income: $49,952 yearly for three and $59,467 for four. Ordinary eligibility generally serves children under 13. Household, activity, priority and funding checks also apply. The higher continuation band is not a new-applicant entry limit.
  • The ordinary route generally requires 20 weekly work or eligible-education hours for a single parent, or 40 combined for two parents. A statewide two-parent age/disability exception requires the other parent to meet 20 hours. A Florida MD or DO documents disability. Caring for an ill child does not itself establish that exception.
What you get
  • Help paying for approved sibling care when the agency’s requirements and funding allow.
What the help covers
  • You pay about 4% of your income toward full-time care, or 2% for part-time; the coalition can waive the fee in some situations.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your local Early Learning Coalition about your work or education situation and any temporary leave.
  2. Have ready current child-care approval dates, household income and work or leave records.
  3. Ask the social worker for supporting records about the treatment schedule.

What happens next
  • Existing help generally continues at the same level during the minimum 12-month eligibility period through qualifying temporary family or medical leave. Specified changes must be reported within 10 days. Renewal, income above 85% SMI and permanent activity loss require separate checks. Permanent activity loss generally allows 90 days to reestablish an activity. The coalition confirms your current approval and notice rights.
Good to know

Keeping existing help during leave and qualifying for new help are different decisions.

Other details
  • A parent’s own qualifying disability and caring for a hospitalized child are different facts. The coalition checks the statutory exception and documentation. Existing temporary-leave protection is a separate route from qualifying for new child-care help.
Ask your social worker

“Could we keep a sibling’s child-care help during leave, or qualify for new help, and what would we pay? Could you help us ask the coalition which records and activity rules apply?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether child-care help can continue while our family manages treatment.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Contact your local Early Learning Coalition before ending existing care. Ask about a temporary leave and the current income limit.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker helps locate the right office and gather supporting records.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides

Ask your social worker
“Can we keep the sibling’s child-care help during medical leave, and what documents do you need?”

How to apply

First step: Contact your local Early Learning Coalition before ending existing care. Ask about a temporary leave and the current income limit.

What to gather

  • The relevant plan or benefit notice
  • Documents showing the need and relevant income

How long: Ask the deciding office for its current processing time.

What a yes looks like

Written confirmation of the benefit, its scope and any cost.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Ask for the reason in writing and the review route.

Watch out

  • The July 2026 family-of-four entry ceiling is $59,467 a year. Full-time copay rates distinguish entry from continuation; the agency checks the work or education requirement and household.
