Georgia program
Buying or updating a Georgia Access plan
Georgia Access is the state Marketplace for buying health insurance, with premium help based on income.
What it is
Georgia Access is the state Marketplace for buying health insurance, with premium help based on income.
A lost plan can open enrollment outside the yearly season. Georgia Access checks the event and financial help. A cancer diagnosis alone does not open enrollment.
Eligibility rules
- An ordinary coverage loss opens enrollment 60 days before or after the loss. Medicaid or PeachCare loss gives 90 days after it ends.
- Other qualifying events can include a move or birth. The Marketplace decides whether the event meets its conditions.
What you get
- A health plan that cannot reject your child because of cancer.
- A possible monthly premium tax credit based on income.
What the help includes
- Premium help depends on the tax household and expected annual income. Enhanced pandemic-era credits ended December 31, 2025. Higher-income families can lose all premium help.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the hospital social worker for a Georgia Access enrollment assister.
- Have ready: the coverage-end letter, expected yearly income and the plans you are comparing.
- Ask the assister to check the exact hospital, cancer team, medicines and specialty pharmacy before you choose.

After you ask
- The insurer gives the coverage start date and first-premium deadline. Requested enrollment documents must be supplied.
Good to know
An insurer’s name is not enough to confirm treatment access. Each specific plan has its own hospital and pharmacy network.
Other details
- Georgia residents use Georgia Access rather than HealthCare.gov. Comparing COBRA can help reveal differences in the care network and total costs.
Federal background: Marketplace special enrollment.
Official sources
“If our coverage ends, which Georgia Access plan would keep our child’s treatment accessible? What are the benefits and drawbacks compared with continuing work coverage, and would you help us enroll if that is best?”
Why I’m asking: I want to avoid an insurance gap and a plan that leaves out the cancer team.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Report the coverage loss and its date inside the period, send documents when asked, and pay the first premium by the insurer's date.
Your social worker
Connects you to an enrollment assister and checks the exact plan against the hospital's contracts.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- Georgia Access decides the enrollment period and the tax credit. The insurer sets the start date.
- Ask your social worker
- “Does this Georgia Access plan cover our hospital and specialty pharmacy? Who can help us compare it with COBRA before we enroll?”
How to apply
First step: Go to georgiaaccess.gov or call 888-687-1503 within 60 days of the coverage loss (90 after Medicaid or PeachCare ends) and report the exact event and date.
- Identify the coverage-loss event and its date.
- Check the treating hospital and specialty pharmacy against the exact plan.
- Compare with COBRA or Georgia continuation before choosing.

Where it starts: georgiaaccess.gov or 1-888-687-1503 (TTY 711)
What to gather
- The coverage-loss notice or the Medicaid/PeachCare termination letter with dates
- An annual income estimate for the tax household
- The names of the treating hospital, oncologists and the specialty pharmacy to check against the plan
How long: Enrollment is immediate once verified. Ask the insurer for the start date.
Clock: 60 days before or after an ordinary coverage loss to enroll through Georgia Access.
Clock: 90 days after Medicaid or PeachCare ends to enroll through Georgia Access.
What a yes looks like
An enrollment confirmation with the premium, the credit and the start date. The hospital confirms it is in network.
What a no looks like, and the next move
'No qualifying event' or 'outside the period'. Ask about COBRA or Georgia continuation, and Medicaid, which has no season.
Watch out
- A diagnosis alone opens nothing. A lost plan, a move, a birth or a Medicaid/PeachCare loss does. Keep the loss letter with its date.
- Check the exact plan's network for the treating hospital and the specialty pharmacy before paying. 'The hospital takes that insurer' is not enough.
- The pandemic-era extra premium credits ended December 31, 2025. Higher-income families can lose all premium help.
Dates that change this
2025-12-31: The pandemic-era enhanced premium tax credits ended December 31, 2025 and were not continued for 2026.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 10, 2026.
What it is worth
An individual plan that must take a child with cancer, bought through Georgia Access, with a premium tax credit by income. Enrollment outside the yearly season after a coverage loss.
- $60 (before or after the loss) — Enrollment period around an ordinary coverage loss
- $90 — Enrollment period after losing Medicaid or PeachCare
Legal protection: Pre-existing-condition protection · 60 days before or after an ordinary coverage loss · 90 days after loss of Medicaid or PeachCare
What it costs the family: Plan-specific premium and cost sharing. The pandemic-era extra premium credits ended December 31, 2025.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Qualifying event
- yes
- Window days ordinary loss
- 60
- Window days after medicaid peachcare loss
- 90
- State based exchange
- Georgia Access replaces HealthCare.gov for Georgia residents
Decisions this site cannot make: Event and subsidy eligibility
Expect friction on: Network and formulary checks · Enrollment timing
The trap: Check the exact plan's network for the treating hospital and the specialty pharmacy before paying. The pandemic-era extra premium credits ended December 31, 2025, so 2026 premiums are higher for many families.
