What it is

Your child's Medicaid does not cover you. Georgia checks your own Medicaid options separately.

Your child's Medicaid does not insure you. Georgia covers a parent under a low line; above it, Pathways goes higher but asks for 80 hours a month of work, school or another listed activity. A child under 6 at home counts as the activity.

Eligibility rules
  • Low Income Medicaid covers a parent or caretaker relative living with the child. Pathways covers adults ages 19–64.
  • Effective March 1, 2026, Low Income Medicaid monthly lines including the 5% allowance are $662 for three people and $787 for four. Published bases are $551 and $653.
  • Pathways monthly lines are $2,276 for three people and $2,750 for four, as printed by DFCS. It requires 80 hours of qualifying activity each month.
  • Qualifying activities include work, job training, job readiness, community service, vocational education, higher education, vocational rehabilitation and SNAP Works.
  • A hospital or skilled-nursing stay can count. Relative caregiving through Structured Family Caregiving in EDWP, CCSP or SOURCE can count.
  • A parent or legal guardian of a child under 6 meets the activity condition only when that child has Medicaid or applies with the adult.
What you get
  • Your own doctor, hospital and prescription coverage if approved.
  • No Pathways premium at any eligible income.
What the help includes
  • Pathways has no premium, but the usual small Medicaid copays can still apply.
  • A child’s approval does not establish the adult’s household, income or activity eligibility.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital counselor whether Low Income Medicaid or Pathways is worth checking for you, and what pursuing either would involve.
  2. Have ready: current pay stubs, work or school hours, and information about any child under 6 applying with you.
  3. Ask the caseworker which activities count and which rules apply to your application date.

After you ask
  • Since October 1, 2025, activity hours are reported at application and annual renewal, rather than monthly.
  • Existing members may request up to 120 good-cause hours per certification year for serious family illness. This is not a general exemption for new applicants.
  • From 2027 the Pathways rules change: a parent of a child 13 or younger is excused from the 80-hour activity test, and earning at least $580 a month counts instead of logging hours. There is also a hardship route when a child must travel far for treatment.
Good to know

Caring for a sick child is not a general Pathways activity exemption in 2026. The under-6 parent route has its own conditions.

Other details
  • The caseworker can check both adult categories on the same application. The child’s coverage and the parent’s coverage can have different outcomes.
  • A caretaker relative can have an adult coverage route even when no parent lives in the home. DFCS checks the relationship and that adult’s own household. Low Income Medicaid and Pathways have different financial tests. An income comparison for one does not decide the other.

Ask whether it was income, the activity hours or a document. Over the line, check Georgia Access within 60 days of losing other coverage.

Watch out

  • Pathways needs 80 hours a month of a listed activity: work, school, job training, community service and a few others. Being the parent of a child under 6 counts only if that child is on Medicaid or on the same application. Caring for a sick child of any age is not on the 2026 list.
  • Hours are reported at application and at each yearly renewal, not monthly, since October 1, 2025.
  • From January 1, 2027 the rules change: a caregiver of a child 13 or under or of a disabled person is excluded from the activity requirement, earning $580 a month counts, and the state can approve a hardship exception for a family travelling for a child's serious treatment. Ask DFCS which rules apply at your renewal.
  • A primary parent or legal guardian of a child under six can meet the activity condition when the child has Medicaid or applies with the adult. Existing members can request up to 120 hours of good cause per certification year for serious family illness; that is not a general new-applicant exemption.
  • Pathways has no premiums at any eligible income. Ordinary Medicaid copayment rules are separate.

2025-10-01: Pathways members report qualifying activities and hours at application and annual renewal only.

2027-01-01: From January 1, 2027 Pathways applies the federal community-engagement rules: caregivers of a dependent child 13 and under or of a disabled individual are excluded, $580 a month of earnings counts, one month of activity before the application month is required, and a medical-travel hardship exception needs state approval. Current members change at their 2027 renewal.
