What it is

Food benefits give your family a monthly grocery balance on an electronic card.

A drop in pay can change food eligibility. DFCS checks this month's income against the line, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. A parent caring for a child who needs daily care can be excused from the work rules with a letter from the clinic.

Eligibility rules
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, ordinary monthly SNAP screens are $2,888 gross and $2,221 net for three people. For four, they are $3,483 gross and $2,680 net. The ordinary standards are 130% of poverty gross and 100% net. DFCS checks any categorical route separately.
  • SNAP’s usual countable-resource limits are $3,000, or $4,500 for a household with an elderly or disabled member, but categorically eligible households do not have that resource test. DFCS checks TANF, SSI and TANF Community Outreach Services routes before deciding which income and savings rules apply.
  • Caregivers of an incapacitated person can have a work-rule exemption with medical verification. A parent of a child under 14 is exempt from the time limit.
  • Most families are screened at 130% of poverty; the higher 200% screen is only for households where every adult is elderly or disabled.
  • Expedited routes include gross monthly income under $150 with liquid resources no more than $100, or income plus liquid resources below shelter and standard utility costs. A qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal-farmworker household can also qualify with liquid resources no more than $100. The caseworker checks the remaining steps.

  • Faster processing, within seven days, when there is very little income and cash on hand.
What the help includes
  • The FY2026 monthly maximum is $785 for three people or $994 for four. The actual benefit can be lower after DFCS checks income and expenses.
  • A fundraiser payout counts in the month it arrives under Georgia’s treatment of this income.

  2. Have ready: income, savings and household-expense records for the application and interview.
  3. Ask the clinician about a letter describing why your child needs daily care if work rules are an issue.

After you ask
  • Every SNAP application is screened for faster service. When the expedited rules and required steps are met, the household must be able to use its benefits by the seventh calendar day, not merely receive a decision. The social worker can help identify very low income and cash, or shelter and utility costs that exceed available income and cash, for the caseworker’s review.
  • The agency can check caregiver exemptions and good cause for leaving a job using the clinician’s letter.
  • If your household already gets SNAP, a changed-income review may be appropriate instead of a new application. The caseworker explains which changes your case must report and the deadline on its notice. Lower income can change the benefit.

Watch out

  • If you stop work to care for your child, get a clinician's letter explaining why your daily care is needed. Ask the caseworker to apply the caregiver work-rule exemption and good cause for leaving the job.
  • Usual resource limits are $3,000 or $4,500 with an elderly or disabled member. Categorically eligible households do not have that resource test; DFCS checks TANF, SSI and TCOS routes before applying a savings exclusion.
  • Tables roll every October 1. Expedited (7-day) service exists when money is nearly gone. Ask for it at filing.
