What it is

TANF provides limited cash help for families with children and very little income or savings.

TANF is a small monthly cash payment for families with wages under about $784 a month and savings under $1,000. A grandparent or other relative raising the child can ask for a child-only grant that ignores the relative's own income; that is the version to ask for by name.

Eligibility rules
  • For a parent and two children, wages must be under $784 a month and savings under $1,000. DFCS takes $250 off each earner's wages before comparing with its $424 standard.
  • Work rules and time limits apply. Child-only cases have different conditions.
  • Both gross and adjusted income tests apply. For four eligible people, the March 2026 gross ceiling is $925 and the need standard is $500. Approved care-cost deductions can reach $200 monthly for a child under 2, or $175 for an older child or qualifying incapacitated adult. DFCS checks the actual costs and conditions.

  • A monthly cash payment, reduced by the income DFCS counts.
What the help includes
  • The March 2026 maximum is $280 a month for a three-person assistance unit or $330 for four, before reductions for countable income. These are maximum cash grants, not income limits.
  • Grandparents Raising Grandchildren is a separate supplement on a TANF child case for a grandparent age 55 or older or disabled.

  2. Have ready: current income, savings and records showing who cares for the child.
  3. If a relative is raising the child, ask the caseworker which child-only rules apply.

After you ask
  • DFCS checks the assistance unit and its income and savings. A written notice identifies the approved payment or reason for denial.
Good to know

Not everyone at home is counted in the cash case, so the payment is set by who is in it, not by the headcount.

Other details
  • A grandparent’s child-only case does not use the same income and work rules as a parent’s whole-family case. The caseworker decides which route fits.
  • A working parent can ask about a one-time payment instead of monthly TANF; DFCS decides the amount and whether any of it must be repaid.
