Hawaii’s adult Medicaid health insurance can cover a parent or another adult caregiver who qualifies.

What it is

Hawaii’s adult Medicaid health insurance can cover a parent or another adult caregiver who qualifies.

A drop in work income can open coverage for you as well as your child. Adults use their own line judged on this month's income. If you are over it and a job ends, HealthCare.gov opens for 60 days.

Eligibility rules
  • Hawaii residency and the adult coverage rules apply.
  • Effective January 13, 2026, the adult base line is 133% of Hawaii’s poverty guideline: $4,207 monthly for four people. The conditional five-point column is $4,365 at 138%.
  • The ordinary adult group is usually ages 19–64 and has its own citizenship or eligible-immigration rules, including waiting-period exceptions. Each adult’s tax and family relationships determine the income household; ordinary MAGI coverage has no savings test. Med-QUEST checks other categories, any charges and the start date, including whether the ordinary up-to-10-day lookback fits.

  • Adult coverage is through QUEST Integration. The chosen plan’s doctors and treatment coverage matter for the parent’s own care.

  2. Bring current income records and explain any change in work or health insurance.

  • Med-QUEST makes a separate eligibility decision for each applicant on the family’s application.

Your child being approved does not cover you. Adults are checked on their own line.

Other details
  • Federal changes are scheduled for January 2027, including work or community engagement for some expansion adults and more frequent renewals. Care of a dependent child age 13 or younger, or a disabled person, can exclude a qualifying caregiver from the work requirement. Med-QUEST confirms Hawaii’s implementation date, any approved delay and the documentation it needs. This is not a work requirement for your child’s Medicaid.

Watch out

  • Hawaii is changing adult rules from January 1, 2027. A parent caring for a child aged 13 or younger is named in the federal exclusion, but Hawaii has not said how it will record that.

The trap: Adults are the group Hawaii is changing from January 1, 2027. Do not drop coverage on the strength of the announcement alone.
