Hawaii program
Grocery money each month (Hawaii SNAP)
Monthly grocery money on an EBT card for households that meet Hawaii’s food-assistance rules.
What it is
Monthly grocery money on an EBT card for households that meet Hawaii’s food-assistance rules.
A loss of pay during treatment can change how much grocery help your family receives. Hawaii starts with a gross-income screen and then works out the benefit. Families in urgent need can qualify for a faster decision.
Eligibility rules
- For October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026, Hawaii’s broad categorical-eligibility gross screen is $5,110 monthly for three people or $6,164 for four. The ordinary 130% gross screen is lower; the categorical route has no asset limit and no separate net-income eligibility test, but the department still calculates the benefit and checks the other rules.
- Expedited tests include gross income under $150 and liquid resources no more than $100. Another test compares income plus liquid resources with rent and utilities.
- A qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household can also meet expedited rules when liquid resources are no more than $100. The ordinary application standard is 30 calendar days.
- SNAP counts everyone who buys and cooks food together, so this household is not the same as Medicaid's. The figures above run to September 30, 2026.
What you get
- Monthly food benefits on an EBT card.
- Access to benefits within seven calendar days when the expedited-service rules are met.
- No savings limit under the categorical eligibility route.
What the help covers
- SNAP is grocery assistance rather than cash for other household bills. The department calculates the monthly amount.
- DHS calculates benefits after applicable earned-income, standard, dependent-care, child-support, qualifying elderly or disabled medical, and shelter deductions. The gross screen is not a grocery award. The branch confirms Hawaii’s current maximum allotment and numeric deduction caps for the benefit month.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the Department of Human Services about SNAP, with help from the hospital social worker if useful.
- Bring current income information and housing and utility costs. Explain any immediate shortage of food or cash.

What happens next
- For an existing case, a qualifying gross-income drop of $50 or more generally must increase benefits by the following month, subject to timely verification. Smaller increases generally follow the first-allotment-at-least-10-days-after-report rule. The counselor can help retain proof of the report date and ask about a supplemental payment if needed.
Good to know
Passing the income screen is not the amount; rent and utilities set that. If you already get SNAP, a pay drop reported within ten days can raise it.
Other details
- A bank balance does not disqualify a household under Hawaii’s categorical route. Separate expedited tests still consider immediately available funds.
- Even without a work change, household or allowable-expense changes can affect an existing award. DHS can review the amount without assuming it will increase. The ordinary 130% route, broad categorical eligibility and elderly or disabled routes have different eligibility tests.

Official sources
“Could SNAP help with groceries during treatment, and do we qualify for faster processing? What would affect the amount, and could you help us apply?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand grocery support using the income our family has now.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

Your social worker
The hospital social worker can start the application with you at the bedside.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The Department of Human Services branch.
- Ask the agency
- “Our income dropped this month because of our child’s treatment. Please screen us for food benefits and tell me whether we meet the expedited rules.”
How to apply
First step: Apply through the Department of Human Services this week, or call 855-643-1643.
- Apply this week and say if cash and bank balances are under $100 with income under $150, which triggers the seven-day route.
- If pay has just dropped, report it now rather than at the next review.

What to gather
- This month’s pay for every adult
- rent and utility costs
- everyone’s Social Security numbers
How long: Ordinarily 30 calendar days; qualifying expedited households receive access to benefits within seven calendar days.
What a yes looks like
A card and a monthly amount, with a review date.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask which income figure was used and whether the household size was right, and appeal by the date on the notice.
Watch out
- Savings do not count here, so do not rule yourself out on the bank balance.
- A qualifying gross-income drop of $50 or more generally affects benefits by the next month, with timely verification; smaller increases follow the first-allotment-at-least-10-days rule.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
FY2026 grocery benefits: the categorical gross screen for four is $6,164 monthly through September 30, 2026. Qualifying expedited households receive access within seven calendar days.
- $6,164/month — Gross monthly income limit, household of 4 (200 per cent)
- $5,110/month — Gross monthly income limit, household of 3 (200 per cent)
- $7 — Expedited decision standard
Legal protection: No resource limit and no net-income test on the categorical route
What it costs the family: Nothing to apply.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- FY2026, October 1, 2025–September 30, 2026: broad categorical eligibility screens gross income at 200% of Hawaii poverty without an asset or separate net-income eligibility test. Other routes use different tests; net income still affects the benefit.
- Resources
- none on the categorical route
- Expedited
- gross income under $150 with liquid resources of $100 or less, a qualifying destitute farmworker household, or income plus liquid resources below rent and utilities
- Reporting
- report a pay drop in writing, in person or by telephone
The trap: Because Hawaii uses broad-based categorical eligibility, there is no resource limit and, since February 1, 2025, no net-income test on that route. So the savings answer must not put anybody off applying, and no vehicle should be counted on that route.
