In Hawaii, Social Security’s approval of SSI does not automatically start your child’s Med-QUEST coverage.

What it is

In Hawaii, Social Security’s approval of SSI does not automatically start your child’s Med-QUEST coverage.

SSI and Med-QUEST answer different questions through different agencies. Social Security decides the monthly cash benefit. Med-QUEST decides health coverage, and an SSI award can support the disability evidence without automatically opening insurance.

Eligibility rules
  • In Hawaii an SSI approval does not switch on Medicaid; your child still needs a KOLEA application.
  • Med-QUEST accepts an SSI or disability award as disability evidence under its aged, blind and disabled rules.

What the help covers
  • The unreduced federal SSI maximum is $994 monthly in 2026. Household income and other SSI rules can reduce that amount.
  • Hawaii adds nothing to the federal SSI amount for a child living at home. During a long hospital stay paid by Medicaid the payment drops to $75 a month.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital social worker to help track both the SSI claim and the KOLEA application.
  2. Keep each reference number and share the SSI decision with Med-QUEST when it arrives.

  2. Send the SSI approval letter to Med-QUEST as disability evidence.

How long: Leukaemia is on the Compassionate Allowances list, so the Social Security side is usually fast. Hawaii’s own timing was not published.

If Med-QUEST says no on income, send the SSI approval as disability evidence and ask for the disability group.

Watch out

  • Do not wait for the SSI letter before applying for coverage.
  • Hawaii adds nothing to the child’s payment at home, so the number to expect is the federal one.
  • The $45 facility supplement needs Medicaid to be paying more than half the cost of care; an ordinary admission is not that.

The trap: The SSI approval is still useful: the state rule accepts an SSI disability approval as disability evidence. So file the Med-QUEST application and attach the SSI letter. Whether any transfer happens in practice, and how fast, were NOT FOUND.
