Help paying for eligible child care
The Idaho Child Care Program helps with eligible child-care fees when the family meets income and activity rules.
What it is
The Idaho Child Care Program helps with eligible child-care fees when the family meets income and activity rules.
Treatment can make child care harder to arrange, for siblings or for the child in treatment. Idaho pays while a parent works or is in an approved activity and income is under the line. A parent who has stopped work to be at the hospital cannot start it new; a family already getting it can keep it for up to three months after work stops.
Children and adult activities
- Usually each parent must meet an approved work, education or training rule. Specific incapacity, child-protection and negotiated-prevention exceptions can apply; the office decides which fits.
- Children are generally under 13. A qualifying child unable to care for themself may remain eligible through the month of the 19th birthday, with the required professional certification.
- The child-care business and care arrangement must also meet program requirements. Reporting one working parent and income below a screen does not settle every test.
What you get
- A subsidy toward eligible child-care fees; the office calculates your share.
- For existing recipients, possible help for up to three months while seeking work or resuming an approved activity.
Income and your share
- The October 2025 gross monthly screen is $2,292 for two people, $2,888 for three, $3,483 for four, $4,079 for five, $4,675 for six, $5,271 for seven and $5,867 for eight.
- Health and Welfare confirms the current table and calculates the family’s income-based copayment. The family may also owe charges the subsidy does not cover.
If you decide to apply
- Ask Health and Welfare which activity rule or exception fits each parent in your household.
- If you decide to request help, gather income, child-age, special-care and work or training records for the idalink application.

If work or training changes
- If you already get the subsidy and stop working, it can continue for up to three months while you look for work or go back to it.
- A parent who has stopped working may be on leave rather than separated. The office must check the actual activity and any exception, not just the job title.
Good to know
The subsidy pays toward eligible child care, not wages for time at the hospital. Your share and uncovered charges still matter.
The child receiving treatment
- The child in treatment can be the one who needs care, for example after-school care while a parent works, if a clinician certifies the need.
“Could help with child care fit the care our family needs, including our child in treatment? What would we pay, and could you help check the activity rules before deciding?”
Why I’m asking: I need to understand whether the care we actually need can qualify.

Where it starts: Ask Health and Welfare which activity rule or exception fits each parent in your household. If you decide to request help, gather income, child-age, special-care and work or training records for the idalink application.
What to gather
- Proof of work or training
- This month's household income
- The child care provider's details
How long: Section 202 allows a limited existing-recipient period for job search or resuming an approved activity. Ask the office whether your circumstances fit and when that period begins and ends. A parent who has stopped working may be on leave rather than separated. The office must check the actual activity and any exception, not just the job title.
What a yes looks like
A notice naming the provider and the family share.
What a no looks like, and the next move
If the no was about the qualifying activity, ask about the three-month continuation rule.
Watch out
- The subsidy pays toward eligible child care, not wages for time at the hospital. Your share and uncovered charges still matter.

What it is worth
A subsidy toward eligible child-care fees; the office calculates your share. For existing recipients, possible help for up to three months while seeking work or resuming an approved activity.
- $2,292 — Gross monthly income limit, household of 2
- $2,888 — Gross monthly income limit, household of 3
- $3,483 — Gross monthly income limit, household of 4
- $4,079 — Gross monthly income limit, household of 5
- $4,675 — Gross monthly income limit, household of 6
Covers: Payment toward eligible child care when child, income, adult activity/exception and care-business rules are met, including subject to eligibility, the child in treatment.
Legal protection: Existing recipients may receive up to 3 months while seeking work or resuming an approved activity under section 202. This is not a new subsidy merely because a parent stops work.
What it costs the family: The office calculates the income-based copayment; charges outside the subsidy can remain payable.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Activity
- Usually each parent needs an approved work, education or training activity. Specific incapacity, child-protection and negotiated-prevention exceptions require an agency decision. Hospital attendance alone does not establish eligibility.
- Income
- October 2025 operating gross monthly table, household sizes 2–8: $2,292; $2,888; $3,483; $4,079; $4,675; $5,271; $5,867. The office confirms current table and family calculation.
- Unknowns
- The office confirms the family copayment, approved care arrangement and each parent’s activity/exception; the lower operating table must not be replaced with arithmetic from the older rule’s percentage.
- Age
- Generally under 13; qualifying special-care route through the month of the 19th birthday with required professional certification.
Decisions this site cannot make: Department of Health and Welfare eligibility determination
Expect friction on: No hospital-attendance exception is published, so a parent who stops work to be at the bedside can fall out of the activity test
The trap: The subsidy pays toward eligible child care, not wages for time at the hospital. Your share and uncovered charges still matter.
