Help paying your work-plan premium (premium assistance)
Idaho's Medicaid rules include help with private health insurance premiums.
What it is
Idaho's Medicaid rules include help with private health insurance premiums.
A work plan can keep your child connected to the cancer team, but its premium can be hard to afford. Idaho's rules name premium assistance for Medicaid and CHIP participants. The Medicaid office can explain whether it can help with your particular plan.
Eligibility rules
- The rule's definition includes Medicaid and CHIP participants.
- Idaho pays a work-plan premium when keeping that plan costs the state less than covering your child through Medicaid alone. The Medicaid office does that comparison.
What you get
- A Medicaid-office review of whether premium help can reduce the cost of your work plan.
What the help covers
- Premium assistance concerns the cost of keeping private coverage. The two plans still have their own rules for paying medical bills.
If you decide to apply
- Ask your social worker to discuss premium help with the Medicaid office.
- For that discussion, have both insurance cards and the work-plan premium amount ready.

After you ask
- Your social worker can help Health and Welfare confirm current availability at 1-877-456-1233. The office needs to explain who receives payment, required documents and the decision, payment and appeal deadlines. Its written answer should include the current reimbursement schedule before you budget for help.
Good to know
Premium help is separate from Medicaid eligibility. Medicaid cannot be stopped just because employer coverage is still pending.
Other details
- Changing work coverage before the office answers can affect your child's access to treatment.
- You can discuss premium help while Medicaid is pending. A coverage decision and a premium-payment decision remain separate.
Federal background: Medicaid premium assistance.
Official sources
“Can Idaho help pay our work-plan premium, and would keeping both plans be worth the cost and paperwork? Could you help us get a clear answer from Medicaid?”
Why I’m asking: I want to keep useful coverage without paying a premium we could get help with.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
One call, and a note of who answered.
Your social worker
The office looks up whether the programme is taking applications.
The care team
Nothing.
- Who decides
- The Department of Health and Welfare.
- Ask the agency
- “Our child is on Medicaid and we pay for a work plan. Does Idaho pay any of that premium, and how do we apply?”
How to apply
First step: Call 1-877-456-1233 and ask about premium help for a child on Medicaid.
- Ask the Medicaid office whether Idaho will pay toward your work plan's premium behind your child's Medicaid.
- If a worker says your child must join the work plan, ask for that in writing along with the sentence that says Medicaid cannot be stopped while it is pending.
Where it starts: Ask the Medicaid office directly. No public application route was found.
What to gather
The diagnosis letter, the child’s insurance card, and the last two pay stubs cover most applications. The official page lists the rest.
How long: Unknown. Nothing about the decision time is published.
What a yes looks like
A worker names the programme and sends you a form.
What a no looks like, and the next move
A worker says it is not running. Ask for that in writing, because the rule still names it.
Watch out
- Do not drop the work plan while you wait for an answer.
- Medicaid cannot be stopped while employer coverage is pending. Ask for that in writing if anyone says otherwise.
Dates that change this
2026-09-11: Idaho's rules define a Health Insurance Premium Program, but the operating programme, its application and its telephone number were not found in two research passes. Nothing here promises a payment.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Idaho's rules name a premium assistance programme for Medicaid participants; the payment route is unknown.
Covers: A question to put to the Medicaid office when a family pays for a work plan behind a child's Medicaid
Legal protection: Medicaid must not be denied, delayed or stopped while employer coverage is pending · A child entitled to join a work plan must not be refused Medicaid only because a caretaker did not apply to enrol them
What it costs the family: Nothing to ask.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Who
- Medicaid and CHIP participants, under the rule's definition
- Operating details
- The current operating name, the application, the decision time, whether payment reaches the family or the employer, and any restriction to fee-for-service Medicaid were all NOT FOUND.
Expect friction on: No published application, phone number or decision time
The trap: Idaho's rule requires a participant to apply for and enrol in a cost-effective employer plan as a condition of Medicaid, and says Medicaid must not be denied, delayed or stopped while that coverage is pending. A child cannot lose Medicaid just because a caretaker did not enrol them in a work plan.
