Help with the heating bill (Idaho heating help)
Idaho's heating assistance helps pay a heating bill through your county's community action agency.
What it is
Idaho's heating assistance helps pay a heating bill through your county's community action agency.
A family can qualify for heating help at an income above the food-help line. The local agency checks the household and pays the utility. Crisis help is a separate route when the heat is at risk.
Eligibility rules
- The income line is about $3,578 a month for two people, $4,420 for three and $5,262 for four (October 2025 to September 2026).
- The regular season runs October through September. Priority households can start in October: a child under six, an older member or a member with a disability. Other households start in November; the agency confirms the older-member age and local opening date.
What you get
- One regular payment toward heating each season, when eligibility and funding allow.
- Separate crisis help if no crisis benefit was received in the preceding 12 months, subject to eligibility and funding.
Payment and the crisis lookback
- The local agency pays the utility directly. A seasonal heating award is not a payment for every bill.
- The crisis-benefit lookback does not reset when October starts. Tell the agency about any crisis help received during the preceding 12 months.
If you decide to apply
- Ask your county's community action agency about heating assistance.
- Have household income, family members' ages, the heating bill and any shutoff notice ready. Explain if the heat is at risk.

Crisis response
- A crisis request is acted on within 48 hours, or 18 hours when the danger is immediate.
- If a shutoff threatens medically necessary power, explain that risk to your social worker and the community action agency so they can assess the crisis route.
Good to know
Heating assistance pays a bill. A medical certificate can postpone a shutoff, but it does not pay what you owe.
New-season figures
- The displayed income figures took effect October 1, 2025. Before relying on them for the season beginning October 2026, ask the community action agency to confirm the new table, available benefit amounts, opening date and priority age rule.

Official sources
“Could heating assistance help with our bill, and does our situation qualify for crisis help? Could you help us find the county agency and understand what costs would remain?”
Why I’m asking: I want to keep heat available through treatment and understand how bill help differs from a shutoff hold.

What to gather
- This month's household income
- The heating bill and any notice
- Who lives at home and their ages
How long: For an eligible household, federal law requires assistance resolving the energy crisis within 48 hours after the crisis application, or within 18 hours for a life-threatening crisis, subject to the statutory disaster exception. This is a crisis-resolution standard, not necessarily a cash-payment deadline. If a shutoff threatens medically necessary power, explain that risk to your social worker and the community action agency so they can assess the crisis route.
What a yes looks like
A payment made to the utility on your account.
What a no looks like, and the next move
If it was on income, ask which month's figure was used.
Watch out
- Heating assistance pays a bill. A medical certificate can postpone a shutoff, but it does not pay what you owe.

What it is worth
One regular payment toward heating each season, when eligibility and funding allow. Separate crisis help if no crisis benefit was received in the preceding 12 months, subject to eligibility and funding.
- $2,736.25 — Monthly income limit, household of 1
- $3,578.17 — Monthly income limit, household of 2
- $4,420.08 — Monthly income limit, household of 3
- $5,262.08 — Monthly income limit, household of 4
- $6,104 — Monthly income limit, household of 5
- $6,945.92 — Monthly income limit, household of 6
Legal protection: Regular heating help is seasonal; separate crisis help uses a rolling 12-month benefit lookback. · For eligible households, federal law requires crisis-resolution assistance within 48 hours after application, or 18 hours for life-threatening crises, subject to the statutory disaster exception. This is not necessarily a cash-disbursement deadline.
What it costs the family: Nothing.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- Published monthly limits for households of one to six, effective October 1, 2025; no percentage is printed on the table
- Season
- October through September; applications open in October for a household with a child under six, an older member or a member with a disability, and in November for everyone else
- Unknowns
- The agency confirms October 2026 limits and benefit amounts, local opening dates and the elderly priority age. Keep displayed October 1,2025 limits date-labelled.
- Crisis
- No crisis benefit in the preceding 12 months; the crisis lookback does not reset at the October seasonal boundary. Eligibility and funding apply.
Decisions this site cannot make: Community action agency eligibility determination
Expect friction on: Delivered by county agencies, so the application is local and the opening month depends on who is in the household
The trap: Heating assistance pays a bill. A medical certificate can postpone a shutoff, but it does not pay what you owe.
