Health cover for you, not just your child (Idaho adult Medicaid)

Idaho's Medicaid coverage for adults aged 19 to 64, including parents caring for a sick child.

What it is

Idaho's Medicaid coverage for adults aged 19 to 64, including parents caring for a sick child.

A parent may need coverage when work or pay changes during treatment. Idaho checks each adult on the adult line, judged on this month's income. Add yourself to your child's application.

Eligibility rules
  • Adults aged 19 through 64 must meet Idaho residency and adult Medicaid rules.
  • January 2026 monthly limits: 2 people: $2,489; 3: $3,142; 4: $3,795; 5: $4,449. The stated ceiling is 138% of poverty.
What you get
  • Health coverage for an eligible adult with no monthly premium.
  • One application can include you and your child.
What the help covers
  • Adult Medicaid covers the adult's care, separately from the child's treatment coverage.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your social worker whether including an adult on the idalink application makes sense.
  2. For that review, have the adult's age, current coverage and recent pay changes ready.

After you ask
  • The notice identifies which family members qualify. A child can qualify even when an adult does not.
Good to know

Your child being approved does not cover you. Each adult is checked on the lower adult line.

Other details
  • From 2027 adults must show work or a similar activity at each six-month renewal, but a parent caring for a child 13 or younger, or traveling far for a child's treatment, is excused. Nothing changes for your child's coverage.
Ask your social worker

“Could I get Medicaid while caring for my child, and how would it work with any insurance I have? Could you help me understand the caregiver rules and include me if applying makes sense?”

Why I’m asking: I need my own health care covered while I am looking after my child.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Add yourself to the child’s application and give this month’s income.

Your social worker

The social worker can file both at once.

The care team

Nothing.

Who decides
The Department of Health and Welfare.
Ask the agency
“Please look at the adults in this household on this application too, not only the child.”

How to apply

First step: Discuss whether the adult needs coverage and whether including them on the idalink application makes sense.

  1. Add the parents to the same idalink application.
  2. If a parent has just stopped work, report this month's income, not last year's.
  3. If Medicaid ends for anyone, use the 90-day window at Your Health Idaho.
  4. When the work rules start, ask for the caregiver exemption in writing.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: The same idalink application. Ask for the adults in the house to be looked at as well as the child.

What to gather

  • This month's income for each adult
  • The date work stopped or changed

How long: The same 45-day standard as the children's application.

What a yes looks like

A card for the parent as well as the child.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If the no was on income and work has since changed, reapply with this month's figure.

Watch out

  • Report this month's income. A parent who has just stopped work is often judged on a figure that no longer exists.
  • Work rules start for coverage periods ending on or after January 1, 2027. Ask for the caregiver exemption in writing before then.

Dates that change this

2027-01-01: Idaho will start checking work rules for adults whose coverage periods end on or after January 1, 2027. The published exemptions include the main caregiver relative of a child 13 or younger and a caregiver of a person with a disability.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

Decisions this site cannot make: Department of Health and Welfare income determination

Expect friction on: The work-rule exemptions are published as a list, not as a form, so ask for the exemption in writing

The trap: Losing Medicaid and losing a job plan open different windows at Idaho's marketplace: 90 days after Medicaid ends, 60 days after job coverage ends. Do not let either run out.
