SSI provides monthly disability income. Medicaid pays for covered health care. Idaho handles the two decisions separately, so waiting for an SSI award can leave the Medicaid question unresolved.

- Idaho's ordinary Medicaid decision standard is no longer than 45 days, subject to permitted delays. A fast Social Security disability decision does not complete the state application.
Good to know
An SSI approval letter is not an Idaho Medicaid card. The dates on the Medicaid notice tell you when that coverage starts.

- Idaho's own disability cash program adds at most $53 a month on top of SSI and needs its own application; ask whether your child's situation fits.

The trap: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is on Social Security's Compassionate Allowances list, so the disability decision itself can be quick. That speed does not carry over to Medicaid in Idaho.
