Rides to treatment (Medicaid non-emergency medical transportation)
Medicaid can help your child reach covered appointments, including recurring cancer treatment.
What it is
Medicaid can help your child reach covered appointments, including recurring cancer treatment.
Transportation help is part of Medicaid coverage. The route depends on whether your child uses a health plan or receives Medicaid directly from the state. Distant treatment can also involve a separate review of meals, lodging and an attendant.
Eligibility rules
- Your child must have Medicaid, including All Kids or waiver coverage, and the trip must meet transportation rules.
- Managed-care members use their plan’s transportation service. Fee-for-service members use Transdev for approval.
What you get
- Rides to and from covered medical appointments.
- Approved meals and lodging for distant care, including a needed attendant’s eligible travel costs.
What the help includes
- When approved as necessary, travel help includes the child’s meals and lodging and a needed attendant’s travel, meals and lodging.
- A family attendant’s salary is not covered. Allowed amounts depend on the destination and approved rate.
- Meals and lodging are paid at the state's travel rates for the city you are going to; ask for the figure before booking.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the clinic for appointment dates and your child’s transportation contact.
- Ask the health plan’s ride line how much notice it needs and whether recurring visits can be booked together.
- For Medicaid outside a health plan, ask Transdev at 877-725-0569 about approval and the list of transportation companies.

What happens next
- The ride service confirms pickup arrangements. Recurring treatment dates can be discussed together.
- Travel approval comes before booking meals or lodging that you expect Medicaid to pay.
- For Blue Cross Community Health Plans, Modivcare at 877-831-3148 asks for at least three days’ notice for routine rides. This is a plan-specific example, not a statewide deadline. HFS plan-identification help is 855-828-4995.
Good to know
Transdev approves a ride but does not schedule it. You arrange the ride with a transportation company after approval.
Other details
- Your plan care coordinator, or DSCC/HFS for fee-for-service care, identifies who approves each travel expense. Transdev’s routine fee-for-service role is prior approval and transportation-company information; that does not mean lodging is arranged.

- Medicaid ride booking, notice and distant-treatment travel support — official guidance
“Could Medicaid help with our treatment trips, including longer stays if needed? What arrangements and costs would remain ours, and could you help us request the right travel support?”
Why I’m asking: Getting to treatment can strain our time and budget, and I want to know what travel help is covered.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
The plan can explain booking notice, urgent trips and recurring treatment rides. For fee-for-service, Transdev at 877-725-0569 handles authorization and provider information; the family arranges the ride.
Your social worker
The clinic scheduler gives the dates in advance so recurring rides can be booked together.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The child's health plan (or Transdev for fee-for-service) authorizes each ride.
- Ask your social worker
- “Which transportation line goes with my child's plan, and can the clinic give me the treatment dates so I can book the rides together?”
How to apply

What to gather
- Plan card
- Appointment dates and clinic address
How long: The actual plan or fee-for-service authorization contact confirms advance notice and urgent arrangements; a single statewide 2–3-day rule is not established.
What a yes looks like
A confirmed pickup time for each visit.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask the plan for the reason in writing and file a grievance; the care coordinator can escalate.
Watch out
- Fee-for-service: Transdev authorizes only; you arrange the ride from its provider list.
- There is no single verified statewide 2–3-day booking rule. The actual plan confirms advance notice and urgent-trip arrangements.
- Necessary meals and lodging can be covered, but approval, rates and reimbursement must be confirmed before the family relies on payment.
- When approved as necessary, travel help includes the child’s meals and lodging and a needed attendant’s travel, meals and lodging. A family attendant’s salary is not covered. Ask for approval before booking; the amount depends on the destination and allowed rate.
- For fee-for-service Medicaid, call Transdev at 877-725-0569. Managed-care members call their plan. Ask separately how to request meals, lodging and an attendant.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 10, 2026.
What it is worth
Medicaid can cover medically necessary rides and approved travel-related meals and lodging for the child and a necessary attendant. Managed-care members use the plan; fee-for-service Transdev authorizes rides and provides provider information, but does not book them.
Covers: Rides to and from appointments · Gas reimbursement through some plans (Meridian lists it)
What it costs the family: None.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Medicaid
- required
- Routing
- managed care: the plan's line; fee-for-service: Transdev 877-725-0569 (authorizes only)
- Meals lodging
- The Illinois state plan covers necessary travel-related meals and lodging for the child and a necessary attendant when approved; the plan or HFS confirms authorization, vendor, rates and reimbursement steps.
Decisions this site cannot make: Plan or Transdev authorization
Expect friction on: Lead time · FFS scheduling on your own
The trap: For fee-for-service children (the MFTD waiver keeps children outside managed care), Transdev only authorizes the trip; you or the clinic must find a provider from its list and book separately.
