What it is
Selected foods, nutrition support and referrals for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents.
WIC reviews children under 5 and eligible pregnant or recently pregnant parents separately. Income at or under 185% of poverty meets the income component. Documented qualifying Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish that component too. The clinic still checks category, residence and nutrition needs.
Eligibility rules
- Under 5, or pregnant or recently pregnant; each person is checked separately.
- Income at or under 185% of the poverty level ($50,542 a year or $4,212 a month for 3, effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), or current participation in Medicaid, TANF or SNAP.
- Illinois residence is required, but citizenship is not a condition and proof of citizenship is not required. The clinic checks identity, address, income or documented qualifying benefit participation, and nutritional risk. The clinic can explain acceptable alternatives when usual documents are unavailable.

- A monthly food package for each eligible child, usable alongside SNAP.
- Nutrition support and referrals.
What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.

Good to know
A clinic can review each potentially eligible person. A pending benefit application alone does not establish the WIC income component.
