Indiana program

Money for groceries each month (Indiana Food Assistance)

Indiana's food assistance puts grocery money on an EBT card each month.

What it is

Indiana's food assistance puts grocery money on an EBT card each month.

Food Assistance checks this month's income against the line and savings against the limit, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. A family with almost no income or cash is decided within seven days.

Eligibility rules
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, gross income is screened at 130% of poverty. The four-person line is $3,483 monthly and the three-person line is $2,888.
  • The ordinary net-income test after allowed deductions is 100% of poverty. For FY2026, that is $2,221 monthly for three or $2,680 for four, unless categorical eligibility changes the tests.
  • Resources are generally limited to $3,000, or $4,500 with a qualifying elderly or disabled member. Applicable categorical eligibility can remove the resource test.
What you get
  • A monthly amount on an EBT card for eligible groceries.
  • Benefits within seven days when the household meets the faster-processing rules.
  • Qualifying medical expenses can reduce the income budget when a member meets SNAP's disability rules.
What the help includes
  • For an elderly or qualifying disabled member, unreimbursed medical expenses above $35 monthly can be deducted.
  • A child's SSI status can open deductions for qualifying clinic travel, over-the-counter supplies and copays.
  • The household vehicle is exempt regardless of its value.
  • Seven-day tests include monthly gross income below $150 with liquid resources at most $100; a destitute migrant or seasonal-farmworker household with at most $100 liquid resources; or gross income plus liquid resources below rent or mortgage plus applicable utilities.
  • For a household already receiving SNAP, a change in income or allowed deductions may change the amount. Treatment alone does not guarantee an increase or require a new application.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital social worker to help with the Indiana benefits application online or by phone.
  2. Have income, cash, savings, rent and utility information ready.
  3. Explain any recent pay loss and ask whether the seven-day route fits.

Division of Family Resources, 800-403-0864; Indiana benefits portal · Official page ↗

After you ask
  • The Division of Family Resources reviews the household budget and decides the benefit amount.
  • The seven-day route depends on income and available cash, not simply on a cancer diagnosis.
Good to know

If your child gets SSI, the income test loosens and medical costs over $35 a month come off the budget. Cancer alone, without SSI, does not do that.

Other details
  • Since July 2026 most Indiana families face both the income screen and the $3,000 savings test. A household with a child on SSI skips the income screen and can deduct medical costs.
  • The income table changes October 1, 2026.
  • A decision takes up to 30 days after an interview, or seven days for the lowest-income households. The figures on this card run to September 30, 2026; the office has the table after that.
Ask your social worker

“Could Food Assistance help with groceries as treatment changes our budget? What rules or drawbacks should we understand, and could you help with the application if we fit?”

Why I’m asking: I want to know whether grocery help can leave more of our income for rent and treatment travel.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

File online or by phone, say how much cash is on hand, and report a pay drop when it happens.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can file with you and flag the expedited route.

The care team

Nothing.

Who decides
The Division of Family Resources.
Ask your social worker
“Can you help me apply for Food Assistance today? We have very little cash on hand, so please flag it for the seven-day route.”

How to apply

First step: Apply at fssabenefits.in.gov or call 800-403-0864, and say plainly how little cash is on hand.

  1. Apply this week and say plainly how little cash is on hand.
  2. If pay has dropped, report it within the reporting rules so the amount rises next month.
  3. Once a child is on Supplemental Security Income, give the caseworker the medical costs over $35 a month.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply at fssabenefits.in.gov or call 800-403-0864. Say if you have almost no money: that opens the seven-day route.

What to gather

  • Identity documents for everyone in the home
  • This month's pay
  • Rent or mortgage and utility costs
  • Bank balances

How long: Seven calendar days for the expedited route; 30 days otherwise. An eligible walk-in should be offered a same-day appointment.

What a yes looks like

A card in the post with a monthly amount and a review date.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If savings are the reason, ask which resources were counted, and whether the car was treated as exempt.

Watch out

  • Indiana ended the wider eligibility rules from July 1, 2026, so savings count again: $3,000, or $4,500 if someone in the home is 60 or over or has a disability.
  • The car you drive the household in is exempt whatever it is worth.
  • Once a child is on Supplemental Security Income, medical costs over $35 a month come off the budget: clinic travel, over-the-counter supplies and copays.

Dates that change this

2026-07-01: A 2026 act directs the state to end expanded categorical eligibility unless federal law requires it, so do not rely on a higher screen or a resource exemption. The confirming operating notice was NOT FOUND.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Grocery money every month for households at or under $3,483 a month for four people, with a seven-day route for the lowest incomes.

  • $3,483/month — Gross income limit, household of 4 (130 per cent)
  • $2,888/month — Gross income limit, household of 3 (130 per cent)
  • $7 — Days to expedited benefits
  • $35/month — Medical expenses above this are deductible for an elderly or disabled member

Covers: Monthly grocery money on a card

Legal protection: Vehicles used for household transport are exempt whatever their value · A reported and verified income drop raises the benefit from the following month

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
gross at or under 130 per cent of the poverty guideline; net at or under 100 per cent
Resources
$3,000, or $4,500 with a member aged 60 or over or with a disability
Residency
Indiana

The trap: Indiana ended expanded categorical eligibility from July 1, 2026, so the resource limits bite: $3,000, or $4,500 for a household with a member aged 60 or over or with a disability. A child on Supplemental Security Income counts as a member with a disability, which also opens the medical deduction.
