What it is

An Iowa temporary disability parking permit can help when your child has a qualifying mobility limitation.

Walking from the parking lot can be difficult during treatment. A clinician must assess whether your child meets Iowa’s disability parking criteria. The diagnosis or treatment phase alone does not decide that.

Eligibility rules
  • Iowa accepts the required medical statement from a licensed physician, podiatrist, physician assistant, advanced registered nurse practitioner, chiropractor, occupational therapist or physical therapist, including a qualifying professional licensed in another state.
  • The test is being unable to walk 200 feet without resting, needing a person or a device to walk, or needing portable oxygen. The clinician writes the expected duration on the form.
What you get
  • Use of designated disability parking with an approved temporary permit.
  • A temporary permit for the certified period, up to six months.
What the help includes
  • The disability parking placard itself has no fee. A temporary placard lasts for the certified period, no more than six months. Disability plates are a different, vehicle-specific option for a permanent disability and do not remove normal vehicle registration charges; optional personalized plates can cost more.

After you ask
  • An approved permit shows its expiration date. The medical statement identifies the expected duration.
  • Iowa DOT and county treasurer offices handle permits. If you decide to request one, the issuing office confirms submission options, child identification, the signed medical statement and current processing time. A further temporary permit requires current medical certification; renewal is not automatic.
Good to know

The permit has an expiration date. Continuing mobility problems need another discussion when it expires.

  • Finishing cancer treatment does not itself establish that walking is easy again. The clinician assesses the remaining limitation.
