What it is

Iowa energy assistance helps qualifying households pay toward home heating and handle energy emergencies.

Heating costs can become harder to manage when income falls. A local community action agency reviews the household and fuel costs. Crisis assistance runs throughout the year, outside the regular heating season too.

Eligibility rules
  • The October 2025–September 2026 ceiling is 200% of poverty: $31,300 yearly for one person, $42,300 for two, $53,300 for three, $64,300 for four, $75,300 for five and $86,300 for six.
  • Regular heating applications run November 1–April 30. Households with a member age 60 or older, or a member with a qualifying disability, can start October 1.
What you get
  • A payment toward the heating bill.
  • Year-round crisis help and emergency cooling from May 1 through September 30.
What the help includes
  • The award depends on the household and heating fuel; the income ceiling is not the payment amount.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your local community action agency about regular or crisis energy assistance.
  2. Have the latest heating bill, income proof and Iowa address ready. Include any shutoff notice in the conversation.

After you ask
  • Approved help is paid toward the utility account.
  • A regular heating grant is between $80 and $800, decided within 30 days. Crisis help is reviewed within 48 hours, or 18 hours when the danger is immediate. Summer cooling help is capped at $500.
Good to know

Winter shutoff protection ends April 1. The ordinary heating-application season continues through April 30.

Other details
  • A medical certificate is a separate temporary shutoff protection. It does not erase the energy debt.
  • The income figures above apply through September 30, 2026. The community action agency must confirm the table used from October 1, 2026. Winter disconnection protection runs November 1, 2026 through April 1, 2027 for eligible households with the required agency certification and covered utility service. It does not erase unpaid bills. The agency confirms certification and utility coverage.
