Iowa Medicaid helps you get your child to covered medical appointments.

What it is

Iowa Medicaid helps you get your child to covered medical appointments.

Frequent clinic trips can be hard to arrange. Medicaid transportation has a different booking number for each health plan. Longer trips can also qualify for help with meals and lodging.

Eligibility rules
  • The child must have Iowa Medicaid. Routine trips need at least two working days’ notice; urgent trips may have a shorter arrangement.

  • Free rides to and from covered Medicaid appointments.
  • Possible meals and lodging for trips over 50 miles, under the ride service’s rules.
What the help includes
  • Iowa Total Care: 877-271-4819. Molina: 866-849-2062. Wellpoint: 844-544-1389. Fee-for-service Medicaid: 866-572-7662.
  • The ride service may approve mileage reimbursement instead of arranging a vehicle. Trips over 50 miles may qualify for meals or lodging, but distance alone does not approve payment. The service confirms the child’s trip, parent or attendant coverage, current rates, receipts and claim deadline before costs are incurred. Form 470-5728 documents meal, lodging or medical-attendant needs when required.

  1. Ask the social worker or your child’s Medicaid plan which ride service handles the trip and what approval is needed before travel.
  2. Have your child’s Medicaid card, appointment date, time and address ready. Ask about approval for meals or lodging before a long trip.

  • The booking confirmation gives the pickup arrangements. A long-trip request also needs an answer about any meal or lodging support.
Good to know

Hawki does not include this Medicaid ride benefit. Meals and lodging need their own check with the ride service.

Watch out

  • Two working days of notice for a routine ride.
  • Hawki children are not eligible for this benefit at all.
  • The meals and lodging rates and any escort rule were not published. Ask the broker before you travel.
