WIC serves children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents. Each person has a separate review. Medicaid, SNAP or FIP participation can establish income eligibility; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs.
Eligibility rules
- Eligible participants include children under 5, pregnant parents, nonbreastfeeding parents through six months after pregnancy ends, and breastfeeding parents through the baby’s first birthday. The clinic checks each person’s category and nutrition needs.
- The federal income rule is 185% of poverty, or participation in Medicaid, SNAP or TANF. Iowa’s July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 table allows $4,212 a month for three people and $5,088 for four.
- WIC’s federal eligibility rules do not require U.S. citizenship. Iowa’s local clinic can confirm current Iowa requirements and the documents needed for your appointment. Iowa’s instructions allow alternatives to a Social Security card for identity. Proof of Iowa residence and income or qualifying benefit participation is still needed.

- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
WIC can review current income without waiting for another benefit decision. Having SNAP does not enroll anyone in WIC.
