Help paying for a brother or sister’s child care

Help paying child-care costs for an eligible child at home (Kansas Child Care Assistance).

What it is

Help paying child-care costs for an eligible child at home (Kansas Child Care Assistance).

Care for another child can become hard during hospital visits. Kansas pays part of the cost while a parent works or studies and income is under the line. Its separate no-income-test route is for a parent who is themselves in hospital or unable to care for a child, not for a parent staying beside a sick child.

Eligibility rules
  • The ordinary ceiling is 85% of state median income. Monthly limits effective May 1, 2026 are $5,439 for two, $6,719 for three, $7,998 for four, $9,278 for five and $10,558 for six.
  • The social-service route requires the qualifying parent circumstance and no other adult able to care for the child.
  • The ordinary Kansas child-care route generally serves children under 13; some children ages 13–18 qualify because they cannot care for themselves or are under court supervision.
  • Parents must meet an approved work, education/training or other activity category; ordinary employment cases generally require an average of 20 hours a week, subject to exceptions.
  • Families under the poverty line pay nothing toward the care. Above it, you pay a small share, about 3% of the income figure on the state’s schedule; the worker tells you the amount.
  • Provider charges may exceed the subsidy.
  • Accompanying a hospitalized child is not automatically the same as the parent being hospitalized or incapacitated; the worker must assess any family-crisis or social-services route separately.
  • The ordinary route also generally requires countable resources of $10,000 or less, with program exceptions.
What you get
  • Help paying eligible child-care costs.
  • A financial-test waiver under the qualifying social-service route.
What the help includes
  • The current F-1 schedule and any exemption determine your family share. Child-care charges can exceed the subsidy.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your social worker about Child Care Assistance through the Kansas Office of Early Childhood or a DCF service center.
  2. Have household income and an explanation of the care arrangement ready. Your hospital social worker can help describe the situation.

After you ask
  • The department decides which route and care arrangement qualify.
Good to know

The written social-service rule concerns a parent who is hospitalized or temporarily incapacitated, with no other adult available.

Other details
  • Being with a child in hospital does not itself establish that the parent is hospitalized or incapacitated.
Ask your social worker

“Could child-care help cover care for another child in our family? Which route fits, what would we still pay, and could you help us decide whether to apply?”

Why I’m asking: I want dependable care for the children at home while treatment changes our routine.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply, and ask about the social-service route by name.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can write about the family’s situation.

The care team

Nothing.

Who decides
Kansas Office of Early Childhood, with DCF service centers remaining a published access route.
Ask the agency
“We have another child at home while we are at hospital. Can we get child care help, and does the social-service route apply to us?”

How to apply

First step: If you decide to seek help, the Office of Early Childhood or a DCF service center can assess the ordinary and social-services routes.

  1. Apply through the department if another child needs care while the family is at hospital.
  2. Ask whether the social-service route applies to your situation, and get the answer in writing.

Where it starts: If you decide to seek help, the Office of Early Childhood or a DCF service center can assess the ordinary and social-services routes.

What to gather

  • This month’s household income
  • The child care provider’s details
  • A letter about the family’s situation from the hospital

How long: Decided as an ordinary application.

What a yes looks like

An approval naming the provider and your family share.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Ask whether the ordinary route or the social-service route was considered, and ask for the answer in writing.

Watch out

  • The written social-service route is about a parent’s own hospitalisation, not about staying with a sick child. Ask rather than assume.
  • The ordinary ceiling is set against state median income, not the poverty line, so it is higher than most benefit lines.
  • The May 2026 policy has a $0 share below 100% of poverty and a 3% schedule calculation for other nonexempt households. The worker confirms the F-1 row and exemptions; child-care charges can exceed the subsidy.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Help paying for a sibling’s child care. The ordinary ceiling is $6,719 a month for three people and $7,998 for four.

  • $5,439/month — Income ceiling, household of 2
  • $6,719/month — Income ceiling, household of 3
  • $7,998/month — Income ceiling, household of 4
  • $9,278/month — Income ceiling, household of 5
  • $10,558/month — Income ceiling, household of 6

Covers: Payment towards registered child care · A social-service route where a parent is hospitalised or temporarily incapacitated and no other adult can care for the child

Legal protection: The social-service route waives the income and resource tests where it applies

What it costs the family: The May 2026 policy has a $0 share below 100% of poverty and a 3% schedule calculation for other nonexempt households. The worker confirms the F-1 row and exemptions; child-care charges can exceed the subsidy.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
85 percent of state median income, cells effective 1 May 2026
Household
Ordinarily child under 13, specified exceptions 13–18; approved work/training/activity, ordinary employment average 20 hours/week subject to exceptions. Social-services eligibility separately assessed.
Residency
Kansas
Resources
Ordinary countable-resource limit generally $10,000 with program exceptions.

The trap: Accompanying a hospitalized child does not automatically meet the parent-hospitalization or incapacity category. A worker separately assesses any documented family-crisis or social-services route.
