A shorter walk can help when treatment makes getting around difficult. The placard depends on a functional limitation rather than a cancer diagnosis alone. A listed licensed professional must certify it.
Eligibility rules
- Your child must meet a listed functional limitation certified by an eligible licensed professional.

- A free temporary disability parking placard for the certified period, up to six months.

- The county treasurer’s motor-vehicle office handles the certified TR-159 under the Kansas Department of Revenue’s process.
- There is no fee for a Kansas disability placard or its identification card; disability license plates are a different transaction. The certified TR-159 is normally submitted to the county treasurer’s motor-vehicle office, which can confirm its mail or in-person procedure. A temporary placard is valid for the certified period, no longer than six months; it is for use when transporting the person named on it.
Good to know
A diagnosis alone is not enough. One qualifying limitation is being unable to walk 100 feet without resting.

2026-07-01: From 1 July 2026 a physical therapist is expressly allowed to certify the disability, which settles a disagreement between the current form and the older statute.
