What it is

A free care coordinator for eligible Kansas children with special health needs (Special Health Care Needs).

A coordinator can help connect your child’s services. SHCN checks whether your child fits a current service category, including an SSI route. KanCare or a cancer diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility. Treatment payments need a separate approval.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child must be under 21 and live in Kansas. The regional office serving your county does not narrow statewide eligibility.
  • The program has its own list of conditions and a route for children on SSI; cancer alone is not on the list, so the coordinator checks. One diagnostic evaluation is free if approved in advance, but it is not a second opinion.

How to apply

First step: Your social worker can help contact SHCN at 785-296-1313 or through the KDHE Special Health Care Needs page.

  1. Refer online or call 785-296-1313 and ask for care coordination.
  2. If your child has Supplemental Security Income, say so: it is a direct route in.
  3. Ask what, if anything, the programme covers for a child in cancer treatment before relying on it.
