Kansas program

Monthly cash aid when income has all but stopped

Monthly cash for a Kansas family with children and very little income (Successful Families).

What it is

Monthly cash for a Kansas family with children and very little income (Successful Families).

Cash assistance can help when earnings fall sharply. Kansas compares income after a work-expense deduction with a need standard set by household size and county. A one-time $1,000 diversion payment is the alternative, but taking it blocks monthly cash for a year.

Eligibility rules
  • Kansas compares income after its rules with the basic-plus-shelter standard for the assistance unit. It is not a poverty percentage.
  • Resources included in the test must total $3,000 or less. DCF checks ownership and exclusions; a reported savings band is not the final resource calculation.
  • The ordinary adult time limit is 24 months, with up to 36 months on approved hardship.
  • DCF takes $90 off each worker’s wages, plus child-care costs, before comparing with its standard. The bigger earnings disregard only applies to families already on the program.
What you get
  • Monthly cash based on household size, income and county group.
  • A possible $1,000 one-time diversion payment for a first-time applicant in a crisis.
What the help includes
  • A person receiving SSI is left out of the TANF filing unit.
  • For four people with non-shared shelter, the maximum monthly grant is $454–$497 by county group. DCF checks shelter, the assistance unit and income deductions before setting an award.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask a Department for Children and Families service center about Successful Families or use its self-service portal.
  2. Have current pay, household details, bank balances and any medical-care note ready.
  3. Ask the caseworker to compare monthly aid with diversion and explain any work-requirement exemption.

After you ask
  • The written decision standard is 45 days. The department also has a 30-day target.
  • The notice gives the monthly amount and the standards used in the decision.
Good to know

The $1,000 diversion payment blocks ordinary cash aid for one year and uses six months of its time limit. DCF can explain the written repayment terms before you decide.

Other details
  • A work exemption may fit when a child needs medically necessary extra care at home and nobody else can provide it. Staying at the hospital bedside does not automatically establish that exemption.
  • Taking the diversion payment uses six of the 24 months and closes monthly cash aid for a year. Ask DCF to put any repayment terms in writing before you choose.
  • A qualifying non-parent relative has a separate child-only route. DCF checks legal parenthood and the child’s finances instead of automatically using the caregiver’s household income.
Ask your social worker

“Could monthly cash aid help us, and would the one-time payment leave us worse off later? Could you help compare the choices, work rules and application?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand both the immediate help and what we would give up later.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply, report this month’s income, and ask for the caring exemption in writing.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can write the note about the care your child needs at home.

The care team

The doctor can confirm that the extra care at home is medically necessary.

Who decides
The Kansas Department for Children and Families.
Ask the agency
“Our income has stopped while our child is in treatment. Can we apply for cash assistance, ask about the one-off payment, and have the work requirement excused?”

How to apply

First step: Apply through the department’s portal or call 1-888-369-4777 the week income stops.

  1. Apply the week income stops; the decision standard is 45 days.
  2. Ask about the one-off $1,000 payment, and about what taking it costs you later.
  3. Ask for the work requirement to be excused while your child needs care at home.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply through the department’s self-service portal or a service centre.

What to gather

  • This month’s pay for each adult
  • Who lives at home
  • Bank balances
  • A note from the care team about the care your child needs at home

How long: The decision standard is 45 days. The agency also quotes a 30-day target of its own.

What a yes looks like

A notice with a monthly amount and a card.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Ask which standard and which county group were used, and whether resources or income were the reason.

Watch out

  • DCF checks which resources count toward the $3,000 limit; a savings band alone does not establish the result.
  • Taking the one-off payment blocks ordinary cash assistance for a year and cuts the lifetime limit to 18 months.
  • Being at the hospital bedside is not published as a reason to excuse the work requirement; needing to give medical care at home is.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Monthly cash depends on county, shelter sharing, assistance-unit size and income deductions. A qualifying first-time applicant can discuss the separate $1,000 diversion choice.

  • $386/month — Maximum grant, household of 3, rural county group, non-shared shelter
  • $429/month — Maximum grant, household of 3, highest county group, non-shared shelter
  • $454/month — Maximum grant, household of 4, rural county group, non-shared shelter
  • $497/month — Maximum grant, household of 4, highest county group, non-shared shelter
  • $3,000 — Countable resource limit
  • $1,000 — One-off diversion payment for a first-time applicant

Legal protection: A household member who gets Supplemental Security Income is left out of the filing unit

What it costs the family: Nothing.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
countable income at or under the basic plus shelter standard for the assistance unit; not a poverty percentage
Resources
$3,000 in countable resources
Time limit
24 months for an adult, up to 36 with approved hardship
Residency
Kansas
Processing standard
45 days, with a 30-day agency target

The trap: The $90 work-expense deduction and allowable dependent-care deductions can matter at entry. The 60% earned-income disregard generally does not apply initially unless the recent-receipt exception applies. Caring for a child at home may excuse work requirements when extra care is medically necessary and nobody else can provide it. Hospital bedside care does not automatically establish that exemption.
