Income after a qualifying job loss (unemployment)

Kentucky unemployment can pay eligible workers after a qualifying job loss or reduction in work; it is not paid caregiving leave.

What it is

Kentucky unemployment can pay eligible workers after a qualifying job loss or reduction in work; it is not paid caregiving leave.

Unemployment is money for people who lost their job through no fault of their own. If your employer lets you go, furloughs you or cuts your hours, you can claim. If you quit to care for your child, Kentucky usually does not pay, because it treats that as a personal reason. Each week you claim you also have to be able to take a job, which is hard during intensive treatment.

Eligibility rules
  • You need to have lost work or hours through your employer, enough past wages, and to be able to take a job each week. Quitting to care for your child usually does not count. Calling it a furlough or unpaid leave does not change what actually happened.
  • You must live in Kentucky.
  • For partial benefits, Kentucky subtracts 80% of wages earned in the claimed week from the otherwise payable benefit, rounded as prescribed to the nearest dollar.
What you get
  • Weekly benefits and available weeks depend on the agency’s current schedule, your earnings record and weekly eligibility.
Amounts and limits
  • The lowest payment is $39 a week. The Kentucky Career Center tells you this year's top figure and which applies to your claim.
  • A claim pays for 16 weeks when the state unemployment rate is low, and up to 24 weeks only when it rises above 10%.
  • Five more weeks are possible for people in approved training. The number of weeks on your own claim comes from the office's letter.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your employer’s benefits office to explain leave, reduced hours and furlough options in writing.
  2. If you decide to claim after a job loss, the Kentucky Career Center needs pay and separation records.

If you decide to apply
  • The decision comes from the Kentucky Career Center.
Good to know

This mainly helps a parent whose employer ends or cuts the job. Leave or reduced hours keeps the job; resigning usually closes the door on unemployment.

Other details
  • The office's yearly notice sets the top weekly figure and the number of weeks. Most claims pay for 16 weeks; 24 happens only when state unemployment is very high.
  • For partial benefits, 80% of gross weekly earnings is deducted from the weekly amount.
  • Unemployment is not paid leave for caregiving. The office looks at what really happened, whatever it is called. Each week you have to be able to take a job and be looking for one. Quitting to care for your child usually does not count.
Ask your social worker

“If my work changes because of my child's treatment, would unemployment pay me, or does quitting rule it out? Does this fit us, and can you help me look at leave first?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand the income consequences of a work change.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Ask the employer in writing before resigning, and keep every reply.

Your social worker

The employer's benefits office answers the leave request in writing.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Kentucky Career Center.
Ask HR
“My child has leukaemia and I need time. Before I resign, can we discuss leave, reduced hours or a furlough, and can you confirm the options in writing?”

How to apply

First step: Ask the employer in writing for leave, reduced hours or a furlough before you resign, and keep the reply.

  1. Before resigning, ask the employer in writing for leave, reduced hours or a furlough, and keep the reply.
  2. Before choosing leave, reduced hours, furlough or resignation, discuss the actual arrangements, health coverage and unemployment conditions with the social worker and employer. No option guarantees a claim.
  3. Stay in contact with the employer during any leave; the agency's guide warns about losing contact.

Where it starts: Ask the employer in writing for leave or a schedule change before resigning. If a layoff happens, claim through the Kentucky Career Center.

What to gather

  • The written request to the employer and its reply
  • Pay stubs
  • Any layoff or furlough notice

How long: A claim is decided after the job ends; the weekly rate is set each July.

What a yes looks like

A weekly amount and a number of weeks in writing.

What a no looks like, and the next move

The agency must use what actually happened, not a changed label. A benefits adviser can review the decision, the employer’s accurate records and the appeal deadline.

Watch out

  • Unpaid leave does not itself establish or rule out eligibility. The agency checks the actual work and pay change and weekly work requirements.
  • Partial benefits lose eighty percent of what you earn in the week.
  • The number of weeks runs from sixteen upward. Do not plan on twenty-four.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Weekly payments and available weeks depend on the current Career Center schedule, covered earnings and weekly eligibility.

  • $746/week — Previously recorded July 5, 2026 maximum; current Career Center notice required before use
  • $39/week — Minimum weekly benefit, effective July 5, 2026
  • $16 — Lowest duration classification in the statute
  • $24 — Highest duration classification in the statute

Legal protection: Ask for leave, a schedule change or a furlough before resigning: a quit for a personal reason is generally refused

What it costs the family: Nothing to ask.

The eligibility facts, as published

Work
A qualifying job loss or reduction in work, sufficient covered earnings, and weekly ability, availability and other work requirements. A caregiving quit is generally disqualifying; the agency decides the actual circumstances.
Residency
Kentucky
Partial
eighty percent of gross weekly earnings is deducted from the weekly amount

The trap: Unpaid leave does not itself establish or rule out eligibility. A layoff or furlough does not guarantee a claim either. The agency checks actual work and pay changes, ability and availability for work and required work search. Partial benefits deduct 80% of gross weekly earnings from the weekly amount.
