Food for pregnancy, postpartum parents and young children (WIC)

What it is

WIC offers food packages and feeding advice for eligible pregnant or postpartum parents, babies and young children.

WIC follows the eligible participant, who may be a parent, the child in treatment or a sibling. Certain Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can satisfy the income requirement. The clinic still checks the WIC category and nutritional risk.

Eligibility rules
  • WIC can serve a pregnant person, a breastfeeding parent through the baby’s first birthday, a non-breastfeeding parent through six months after pregnancy, and children under five.
  • A nutrition-risk assessment is also required. Qualifying for the income part alone does not complete WIC certification.
  • The income guideline is 185% of poverty. Qualifying Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish income eligibility. The clinic checks whose participation satisfies that rule.
  • WIC does not ask about immigration status. Bring something showing identity, address and income.

Income examples
  • Kentucky’s posted guideline is effective April 2026, with no printed end date. Monthly amounts are $3,337 for two people, $4,212 for three and $5,088 for four.
  • The three-person annual guideline is $50,542. The clinic uses the appropriate income period and current table.

Good to know

An older child’s cancer diagnosis does not make that child age-eligible for WIC.

Who the food is for
  • Not reporting pregnancy or a child under five does not rule out the postpartum and breastfeeding categories. The clinic can check each possible participant.
