What it is

WIC is for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents, each checked separately. Income at or under 185% of the poverty line qualifies, and taking part in Medicaid, SNAP or TANF can simplify the income check; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs at an appointment.
Eligibility rules
- WIC serves children under five, pregnant people, breastfeeding parents through the baby’s first birthday and non-breastfeeding parents through six months after pregnancy. Each participant needs a nutrition-risk assessment.
- Kentucky’s posted table is effective April 2026: $4,212 monthly for three people and $5,088 for four, at 185% of poverty. It states no end date; the clinic confirms the table in use for your appointment.
- The Kentucky WIC clinic confirms the identification, residence and income documents it accepts, and any applicable citizenship or immigration rules. Qualifying Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish income eligibility. The clinic checks whose participation qualifies and the remaining WIC conditions.

What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
WIC can review your younger child using your income now; qualifying benefit participation can simplify the income check, but you do not need to wait for another program’s decision.

- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
