Louisiana adult Medicaid can help you get your own medical care, including when you are a relative raising a child.

A reduction in pay can change whether you qualify for your own Medicaid coverage. Louisiana checks current monthly income. Your child can qualify even when the lower adult income limit does not fit you.

Eligibility rules
  • The chart effective March 1, 2026 lists monthly limits of $2,489 for two people, $3,142 for three, $3,795 for four, $4,449 for five and $5,102 for six. These include the five-percentage-point allowance. The worker confirms the adult’s household and any later table update.
  • Louisiana decides your Medicaid household and the income it counts. Annual income divided by 12 is only an estimate.
  • Adult expansion Medicaid covers eligible adults ages 19 through 64, including relatives raising a child. The worker checks the adult’s household, coverage and citizenship or eligible immigration category. The child’s coverage does not establish the adult’s eligibility.
  • From 2027, adults on Medicaid will need to show work or another activity, with an exemption for a parent caring for a child aged 13 or under or for a person with a disability. Louisiana will say how to prove it when the rule starts.

After you apply
  • The ordinary federal decision limit is 45 days, with limited documented exceptions. An approval gives you coverage in your own name.
Good to know

Your child being approved does not cover you. Add yourself to the application and the state checks you on the adult line.

Other details
  • If employer coverage ends, HealthCare.gov offers a separate coverage-loss enrollment route. Its deadline is separate from Medicaid.

Watch out

  • Louisiana looks at this month, so apply in the month the pay drops.
  • It is a lower line than your child's; a family can be over it while the child is under theirs.

Dates that change this

2027-01-01: From January 1, 2027 some adults on Medicaid must report community-engagement activity. Louisiana's July 2026 report names caregivers of young children or of a disabled person as exempt but does not give the exact age or conditions. Ask the office how it applies to a parent caring for a child in treatment. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
