SNAP is monthly grocery money on a card. The office screens income, then deducts rent, utilities and child care to set the amount. If you already get SNAP, a pay drop is reported as a change, not a new application.

Eligibility rules
  • Most families are screened at 200% of poverty, about $4,442 a month for three people; rent, utilities and child care then set the amount. A household with an older or disabled member has different rules.
  • SNAP uses fiscal-year tables that change each October. For October 2025 through September 2026, the size-three figures are $2,888 gross and $2,221 net for the basic route, and $4,442 gross for Louisiana’s higher route. The office confirms which route and household apply. These screening amounts do not promise a benefit.

  • SNAP provides grocery benefits on an electronic card. Through September 30, 2026, the maximum for three people is $785 a month; the office calculates the actual award from countable income and allowed expenses. Amounts and screening tables change on October 1. A household already receiving SNAP can have its award reviewed after a change instead of making a second application.

After you apply
  • A signed SNAP application with your name and address can protect a filing date before all proof is ready. The usual processing limit is 30 days; qualifying expedited households can receive benefits within seven calendar days. Keep the receipt. When you already receive SNAP, your social worker can help report a pay change and ask when a recalculated award would take effect.
  • Expedited screening includes gross monthly income below $150 with liquid resources no more than $100. Other qualifying tests cover certain destitute migrant or seasonal households, or gross income plus liquid resources below rent or mortgage and utilities. Identity must be verified; other proof must not improperly delay expedited benefits.
Good to know

A lower paycheck can change an existing SNAP award. Reporting the change is a separate step from a new application.

2026-09-10: Louisiana's SNAP income tables were only reachable through a search index because the state page returned an internal error, so no Louisiana figure is printed. The federal tables also roll on October 1, 2026. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
