What it is

MaineCare arranges rides to covered medical appointments through a broker serving your county.

Repeated treatment trips can make transport part of the care plan. MaineCare’s transportation broker can arrange eligible rides. Urgent appointments are handled differently when ordinary notice is impossible.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child needs MaineCare and travel to a covered appointment under the transport rules. The broker checks suitable transport options and the requested trip, including any escort.
What you get
  • Free eligible rides to hospital, clinic and pharmacy appointments.
What the help includes
  • The county broker arranges the trip. A treatment-cycle schedule can help you discuss recurring rides.
  • For a long trip the broker can also approve mileage, meals, a room and an adult traveling with your child, but only in advance; ask before you pay.

Watch out

  • Two business days' notice for an ordinary trip. Book the whole cycle at once.
  • For an urgent appointment say the word urgent; the broker verifies it and can still take you.
  • Meal and lodging help on a long journey is not published. Ask the broker before you drive to Portland or Bangor and pay for it yourself.

The trap: Book at least two business days ahead. An urgent appointment is an exception and the broker verifies it, so say the word urgent rather than giving up. Set up the standing bookings for a whole cycle at once instead of ringing every week.
