Maine program
Health insurance for you (adult MaineCare)
MaineCare coverage for an adult whose current income meets the adult limit.
What it is
MaineCare coverage for an adult whose current income meets the adult limit.
Reduced earnings during your child’s treatment may change your own coverage options. Adult MaineCare uses a lower income limit than child coverage. You can be considered on the same application.
Eligibility rules
- This expansion category covers Maine residents ages 19 through 64.
- The 2026 monthly limits are $2,490 for two people, $3,142 for three and $3,796 for four.
- The base standard is 133% of poverty, published as 138% with the five-point allowance.
- Maine decides your household and which income counts. A yearly figure divided by 12 is only an estimate.
What you get
- No monthly premium for eligible adult coverage.
- Hospital care, clinic visits, prescriptions and mental health care.
What the help includes
- Your own health care is covered separately from your child’s care.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the hospital financial counselor to include you on the MaineCare application if you want adult coverage reviewed.
- Have current pay information and details of any income change ready.

After you ask
- The Office for Family Independence reviews adult coverage on the shared application.
Good to know
Your child can qualify when you do not. The adult income limit is lower.
Other details
- Work rules are scheduled for January 1, 2027 for specified expansion adults. They do not apply uniformly to every parent coverage category.
- From 2027 some adults must show work or other activity; a parent caring for a child aged 13 or under, or for a person with a disability, is exempt.
Official sources
“Could I qualify for MaineCare as well as my child? What would change with my current insurance, and would you help me apply if it makes sense?”
Why I’m asking: I want to keep my own health care covered while caring for my child.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Add yourself to the child's application and report this month's income.
Your social worker
The hospital financial counsellor can file both at once.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The Office for Family Independence.
- Ask your social worker
- “My hours have dropped. Can we add me to the same MaineCare application as my child?”
How to apply
First step: Add the parents to the child's application at mymaineconnection.gov.
- Add the parents to the child's application.
- Report the pay drop in the month it happens.
- If work rules come up for 2027, say you care for a child with a serious illness.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: The same application at mymaineconnection.gov.
What to gather
- This month's pay stubs
- Who lives at home
How long: The same 45-day standard as the child's application.
What a yes looks like
A card for the parent as well as the child.
What a no looks like, and the next move
If the no is about income, ask them to redo it on the current month.
Watch out
- It is judged on this month, so apply the month the pay drops.
- From January 2027 adults face work rules; caring for a seriously ill child is an exemption you have to report.
Dates that change this
2027-01-01: From January 1, 2027 expansion adults have to meet new work rules. Caring for a person with disabilities, or for a dependent child aged 13 or younger, is listed as an exemption that has to be reported.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

The eligibility facts, as published
- Age
- 19 to 64
- Income
- at or under 133% of the poverty level plus the five-point allowance, published as 138%
- Residency
- Maine
- Changes 2027
- Work requirements scheduled for January 1, 2027 affect specified expansion adults, not all parent categories. A parent, guardian or caretaker of a dependent child age 13 or younger or a person with a disability may be exempt; OFI confirms evidence and reporting.
Decisions this site cannot make: Office for Family Independence determination
Expect friction on: New work rules for adults start January 1, 2027
The trap: It is judged on this month, so apply the month the pay drops rather than waiting for a tax return. Put it on the same application as the child.
