Monthly food benefits on an EBT card for an eligible household.

A change in pay can change grocery help. Maine checks this month's income against the screen, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount.

Eligibility rules
  • You must meet Maine SNAP household and income rules.
  • The listed monthly gross screens are $3,607 for two people, $4,553 for three and $5,500 for four.
  • The corresponding screens are $6,447 for five people and $7,393 for six.
  • Households covered by Maine’s broad-based categorical eligibility have no asset limit.

After you ask
  • Ordinary SNAP processing takes up to 30 days. Qualifying expedited households must have benefits available within seven calendar days. An elderly or disabled household above the categorical gross screen may still need the regular net-income and resource review. A diagnosis alone does not establish SNAP disability status.
  • Expedited tests include gross monthly income under $150 with liquid resources no more than $100; a qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal household with no more than $100 liquid resources; or gross income plus liquid resources below shelter and utility costs. OFI determines which test applies.
Good to know

Passing the screen is not the amount; rent and utilities set that. If you already get SNAP, a pay drop is recalculated and usually raises it.

  • If you already get it and pay drops, report it: the amount goes up.
  • There is no savings test for the households on the chart, so do not rule yourself out on savings.

Dates that change this

2026-01-01: The rule chart heads the current column January 13, 2026 and the adoption notice says January 15, 2026. The two-day difference is unresolved, so no start date is given.

2026-09-11: The standard medical deduction, the conditions for expedited processing and the exact reporting deadline after a pay drop were not published in what we could read.
