Maine program

Monthly cash assistance (Maine TANF)

Cash assistance for a family with very little income and limited assets.

What it is

Cash assistance for a family with very little income and limited assets.

A loss of earnings can make monthly cash worth asking about. Maine takes deductions off your income and compares what is left with a need standard; the grant fills part of the gap. A relative raising the child can get a child-only grant.

Eligibility rules
  • You must meet Maine’s family and financial rules, including the $10,000 resource limit and applicable exclusions.
  • The calculation disregards the first $108 of an applicant’s earnings, then half of the remaining earnings below poverty.
  • OFI decides who is in the grant; a child on SSI is left out. A grandparent or other relative can ask for a child-only grant without their own income counting. Caring for a seriously ill child can be good cause for not meeting the work rules; ask.
What you get
  • Monthly cash for basic household costs, with the amount set by the family’s income and needs.
  • Separate work-related Alternative Aid and Emergency Assistance may also be reviewed.
What the help includes
  • The most a family of three can get is $917 a month ($943 from October 2026), and $1,155 for four; income reduces it.
  • Current child-only maxima are $730 for three and $959 for four. Child-only amounts differ from adult-included grants.
  • Alternative Aid makes vendor payments for qualifying work-related needs. It generally uses a 133%-of-poverty gross-income test and can total up to three maximum monthly grants in 12 months. Starting TANF within the relevant three months can require repayment of overlapping Alternative Aid.
  • Child-only Standards of Need for one through four children are $296, $565, $835 and $1,100 through September 30, 2026. From October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, they become $303, $579, $855 and $1,127.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the Office for Family Independence to review TANF through My Maine Connection.
  2. Have current income and asset information ready. Explain who needs assistance and how caregiving affects work activities.

After you ask
  • The Office for Family Independence has a 30-day decision deadline.
  • Fedcap Families administers work activities and discusses good cause.
Good to know

Not everyone at home is counted in the grant. Caring for your child can excuse you from the work rules; ask the caseworker.

Other details
  • A 60-month lifetime rule applies, with exceptions and extensions.
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, child-only maxima for one through four eligible children are $260, $495, $730 and $959. For October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, they are $267, $509, $750 and $986. The assistance unit may differ from everyone living at home.
  • Emergency Assistance has separate emergency and timing rules and generally pays a vendor. It requires a dependent child under 21 and income below 100% of poverty after applicable disregards, or a specified route where every person requesting assistance receives a listed benefit. It has no asset test.
  • The 60-month lifetime limit has defined exceptions and extension procedures. OFI reviews the particular caregiving circumstances; a cancer diagnosis alone does not establish an extension.
Ask your social worker

“Could cash assistance help while I care for my child, and what work rules or drawbacks would apply? Would you help us apply if it makes sense?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether help with ordinary household costs is available.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply in the month income drops and say who is in the assistance unit.

Your social worker

Fedcap Families runs the work-activity programme and discusses good cause.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Office for Family Independence, within 30 days.
Ask the agency
“My child is in cancer treatment and our income has stopped. Can we apply for cash assistance, and what is the good-cause position on my caring responsibilities?”

How to apply

First step: Apply at mymaineconnection.gov in the month the income drops.

  1. Apply in the month the income drops.
  2. Ask about Alternative Aid if the need is one-off and work-related.
  3. Raise the caregiving directly when work activities are discussed.

What to gather

  • This month's income
  • Savings and account balances
  • Who is in the household

How long: A decision is due within 30 days.

What a yes looks like

A monthly payment and a place on the work-activity programme, with good cause discussed.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If the no is about savings or the lifetime rule, ask about Alternative Aid and Emergency Assistance instead.

Watch out

  • Maximum grants and Standards of Need are separate figures. Neither is a gross-income cutoff; OFI builds the assistance-unit budget after deductions.
  • Savings over $10,000 close the door.
  • A relative raising the child can ask about the child-only grant, which is a separate and lower figure.

Dates that change this

2026-10-01: The grant figures rise on October 1, 2026: a unit of three to $943 and a unit of four to $1,187.

2026-09-11: Nothing published says that sitting with a child in hospital is an automatic exemption from work activities. The good-cause rule names care given in the home.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Up to $917 a month for a unit of three and $1,155 for four, rising to $943 and $1,187 on October 1, 2026.

  • $917/month — Maximum grant, adult-included unit of 3
  • $1,155/month — Maximum grant, adult-included unit of 4
  • $730/month — Maximum grant, child-only unit of 3
  • $959/month — Maximum grant, child-only unit of 4

  • $30 — Decision deadline

Covers: Alternative Aid: qualifying work-related vendor payments worth up to three maximum grants in 12 months, generally at a 133% gross-income test. Overlapping TANF within three months can require repayment. · Emergency Assistance as a separate route

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
the unit's need is compared with income after the disregards; the first $108 of an applicant's earnings is disregarded, then half of what remains below the poverty level
Assets
$10,000
Residency
Maine
Note
SSI recipients are excluded from the assistance-unit grant. An excluded nonparent claiming children as tax dependents may have half the appropriate Standard of Need imputed as unearned income. OFI checks legal relationships, unit membership and caregiving good cause.

Decisions this site cannot make: Office for Family Independence determination

Expect friction on: Work-activity requirements with a limited caregiver exception

The trap: The published figures are standards of need and maximum grants, not income ceilings, so do not read $1,324 as a cut-off. The work-activity good cause covers care that has to be given in the home; nothing published makes sitting at a hospital bedside an automatic exemption, so raise it with the caseworker directly.
