What it is

WIC is for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents, each checked separately. Income at or under 185% of the poverty line qualifies, and taking part in MaineCare, SNAP or TANF can simplify the income check; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs at an appointment.
Eligibility rules
- Under 5, or pregnant or recently pregnant; each person is checked separately.
- Income may qualify at or under 185% of poverty, or through participation in Medicaid, SNAP or TANF. Maine’s June 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 table gives $4,212 monthly for three people and $5,088 for four.
- Federal WIC rules do not impose a citizenship or immigration-status eligibility test. Maine WIC confirms the identity, residence and other eligibility records needed for your visit.
- An eligible nonbreastfeeding postpartum parent generally qualifies through the last day of the sixth month after pregnancy ends, including after pregnancy loss. An eligible breastfeeding parent may qualify through the infant’s first-birthday month while breastfeeding, subject to certification rules.

- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
The clinic can review current income while another benefit application is pending. Qualifying benefit participation can simplify that check.

- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
